About Nikki Pynn:
Nikki Pynn is a New River Valley based artist, who has been working to transform the traditional art form of stained glass into sculpture. She frequently integrates stained glass with found metal objects. Putting glass in the structures to create sculpture repositions traditional stained glass from the window to the middle of the room. Nikki draws on folk art for the stands, which hold glass constructions, marrying two distinctly different genres of art. Influenced by artists and farmers who solve problems and create with what is at hand, Nikki has pulled from scrap piles at bike shops and dump areas, and has dug up pieces from abandoned farms to build the sculpture stands. Bikes are built to move. Using discarded bike wheels, Nikki invites viewers to touch and move the art, thwarting usual gallery rules.
Nikki discovered stained glass while working towards her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University. She constructed stained glass panels by traditional methods from graduation in 1980 until 2012. From then, she has experimented with the fragility within the stability of sculptures.
