Appalachian Traditions: Mugwort, Yule & the Winter Solstice

The longest night of the year is honored through many rich traditions throughout the world. In Appalachia these traditions tend to be a mix of Scott’s Irish, with a heavy pinch of Cherokee wisdom and a dash of Celtic lore; these are the ways that have held on for generations in the hollers; yet they are fading fast.

In this class we’ll explore the different traditions and lore that today remain as little fragments of stories and superstition. Mugwort, the longest night of dreams, fires lit awaiting the return of the sun, and community celebrations. These all played an important role in the lives of our ancestors.

Join Laurie as she weaves together the knowledge left from our past and brings it to life through stories and tales of old as you create your own Dream Doll or Pillow and an Incense Blend to take home.
