The Kindest People are a dynamic four-piece indie/garage rock band hailing from the mountains of Johnson City, Tennessee. Originally formed in July 2015 by Matthew Sykes and Spencer Otey for a weekend of shows, the band’s unexpected chemistry propelled them to continue their musical journey. Now, seven years, five albums, and two EPs later, The Kindest People have solidified their place in the Appalachian music scene, delivering their own distinctive brand of DIY rock and roll.
Blending modern pop sensibilities with a deep appreciation for the raw energy of 60’s garage rock and the spirit of 90’s alternative, The Kindest People have crafted an extensive catalog of albums and content that showcases their versatility and evolution as artists. Their inaugural self-released EP, Versions in 2016, brims with infectious surf-rock vibes, drawing from Matthew and Spencer’s collaborative songwriting roots in high school.
In 2017, the band unveiled their debut full-length album, Idle Revival, a conceptual album inspired by the enigmatic Heaven’s Gate cult. This ambitious project delves into the protagonist’s desperate struggle to escape the clutches of a fictional cult, resulting in a captivating musical experience. The next year, The Kindest People released the follow up to their first EP with Versions II, showcasing their growth and expanding sonic palette.
Continuing their penchant for thematic exploration, the band released their sophomore album, Observations from the Alternate, in 2019. This concept record invites listeners to delve into introspective journeys, examining the consequences of choices through the prism of alternate timelines.
Despite the challenges imposed bylockdowns in 2020, The Kindest People went in the studio and released two full-length albums. Companions, an ode to friendship imbued with Appalachian and blues influences, highlights their ability to capture genuine emotions in their songwriting. Simultaneously, Director’s Cut, a sci-fi-inspired concept album, takes listeners on an otherworldly journey, showcasing the band’s imaginative storytelling prowess.
In their latest release, the eponymous album “The Kindest People” in 2021, the band takes a reflective and personal approach to their songwriting, shedding the concept-driven style. This record serves as a testament to their willingness to embrace change and grow with each new release, further solidifying their artistic versatility.
Whether you find solace in their extensive discography or immerse yourself in the electrifying energy of their live performances, one thing is certain—when you’re in the company of The Kindest People, a good time is guaranteed.
