Shape Note Singing Demonstration

August 22 : 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Free

Come learn about shape note singing as a part of the Floyd Living Traditions Festival! Shape note singing, also known as Sacred Harp singing, is an American tradition of unaccompanied hymnal singing that dates back to the Colonial-era. Taking its name from a musical notation system where notes are written on the page with different shapes, the music is characterized by open harmonies and a raw, powerful sound. Singers coming to town for the Floyd County All-Day Singing will sing popular tunes from The Sacred Harp, followed by more singing in the park.
