This workshop is for beginners as well as for practicing beekeepers.

Participants will learn about the Honeybee as a creative and life-supporting insect and about beekeeping methods that honor her very own needs. We will look at the history and evolution of beekeeping practices as well as the present challenges the bees and beekeepers face. We will also explore the current plight of the Honeybee and discuss what can be done for the future. Topics include:

  • Pros and cons of different hive forms and materials
  • The importance of swarming, expanding the apiary naturally
  • The vital importance of having naturally raised queens
  • Working without foundations
  • Seasonal tasks
  • Mites, hive beetles, foulbrood, etc.
  • Treatments and teas
  • Selecting best bee forage

 

Friday class will be held upstairs at The Floyd Country Store, 206 S. Locust Street, Floyd, VA 24091
Saturday class will start upstairs at The Floyd Country Store, 206 S. Locust Street, Floyd, VA 24091 and will end at the Sanctuary, 401 Hideaway Lane, Floyd VA (weather permitting)
