Opening Arts Gallery Reception at Hotel Floyd

March 4, 2016 : 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

A new art show featuring local artist Darcy Meeker opens, Friday, March 4th, 5-7PM with a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception at Hotel Floyd.

Darcy Meeker tools copper, creates sculpture in stone, clay, silk, aluminum, plus paints, makes collages and prints on a variety of materials with the same wide-ranging enthusiasm. She also sculpts light, currently developing a walk-through light/sculpture experience.

It all started when she made her first face in clay at age 44 and discovered sculpting magic in her hands. Some 57 faces later, she carved her first stone at a two-day workshop and traded it with the teacher for a set of tools and a new rock. Soon, she resigned from the agricultural extension communications faculty at the University of Florida and moved to Blacksburg to carve out a new life for herself as an artist.

When Darcy is not in her studio carving stone or embossing metal, you can find her teaching classes and workshops all over southwest Virginia or working on her latest passion, the Color Project. She lives in Blacksburg, VA, with her devoted husband, Jim Pease, who lavishes her with love and support the likes of which no partner on this earth could equal.

Hotel Floyd’s art gallery, featuring local artists every two months, is offered in partnership with The Jacksonville Center for the Arts and has been in rotation since early 2015. The gallery is located just inside the hotel’s beautiful lobby, across from the registration desk, and is open to the public.
