Learn about the ecology and geology of southern Appalachia during this 3/4 mile trek, winding through the woodlands of Check in the northeastern corner of Floyd County. Hikers will be on the headwaters of the south fork of the Roanoke River, originally named Goose Creek by the early colonists. Fred First has written much about Goose Creek in his books.

Participants will start the hike at the First’s place at 1020 Goose Creek Run, Check, VA, 24072. Participants are encouraged to sign up early because the group is limited to 15 people. A $25 cash donation is requested on arrival at 1020 Goose Creek Run.
