Gallery Opening – Hotel Floyd

March 8, 2019 : 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Friday night fun in downtown Floyd will start March 8th with a free reception to meet three outstanding regional artists and see their work from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Floyd Center for the Arts Gallery in the lobby of Hotel Floyd. Everyone is welcome at the friendly Hotel Floyd Art Show sponsored by the Center. The opening reception will feature complimentary snacks, a cash bar offering wine and beer and the opportunity to buy creative artwork. All proceeds benefit the Floyd Center for the Arts.

This Friday, March 8th, reception will highlight the work of painter Fred Jones, jewelry artist Nell J. Fredericksen and wood artist Daniel Sanchez, who will all be available to discuss their creations.

Jones, who makes his home in Floyd County, has explored many mediums. Oils are his favorite medium. “I was drawn to art from the time I was a child, but it was not a pursuit my parents encouraged,” says Jones. “The strong arts community in Floyd offered an environment conducive to developing my interest in the arts.” This exhibit at Hotel Floyd will feature many of Fred Jones’ scenes from Floyd County as well as his portraiture. Jones, whose work has been called contemporary realism, works in stunningly large formats.

Daniel Sanchez, also of Floyd, was employed as a logger when he discovered the distinct beauty of various woods and burls. He has been a working artist for only three years, but his large, hand-carved creations have the admiration of wood artists of far greater repute.
“I enjoy the transformation of a piece of wood into an even more beautiful piece of art and that’s the reason I keep doing it,” says the self-taught Sanchez.

Jewelry artist Nell J. Fredericksen of Sugar Grove Studio in Ferrum, VA says the beauty and joy of the natural world flows through all her designs. Fredericksen has been a professional artist for 29 years and holds a master’s degree in zoology. She is intrigued by the ability of metal to take many shapes.“Then,” she says, “there is the endless source of color that can be utilized – from raw stone to finely faceted gems to different colored metals – the palette is endless.”

The artwork displayed March 8th will be for sale at Hotel Floyd for two months, when the next Hotel Floyd Art Show will be held, which is on the 2nd Friday, every other month, from 5-7 p.m. This reception and artists’ exhibit have been a partnership between the Floyd Center for the Arts and Hotel Floyd since early 2015.
