Floyd County Historical Society presents “Traditional Folk Culture of Southwest Virginia” By Ricky Cox

The presentation on “Traditional Folk Culture of Southwest Virginia”
begins with a discussion of Oral Folklore, including dialect; proverbial
expressions; riddles; and folk narratives, like jokes and legends.
Customary Folklore, including superstitions and beliefs associated
with daily life, for example following signs for planting, harvesting,
and managing livestock; and beliefs and practices connected to
significant life events (birth, marriage, death) will be discussed briefly.
The program will conclude with a few minutes of music, which like
many folk traditions encompasses both oral and customary folklore.
