Open Studio Event for the 3 days before Labor Day

Sept. 2,3,4 – 11am- 2pm

Seven people of various ages and shades of grey stand in a group all looking up toward the sky. Nearby an ordinary looking guy sits on top of an 8 ft. tall column. The constructed wood sculptures stand outside my studio waiting to be delivered to public art exhibitions in Chattanooga and Atlanta. You can see them and more at his Open Studio and Sculpture Trail event – Sept. 2, 3, and 4 from 11am – 6pm.

The group of seven figures is for a two-year exhibition at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center in Chattanooga’s Martin Luther King district. The title “Future and a Hope” comes from the prophet Jeremiah – For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11.  “Ordinary Guy” sitting casually up on the column honoring everyday people will be part of this year’s Art on the Atlanta Beltline event. The Beltline, Where Atlanta Comes Together, is a new public space being developed in Atlanta on a 22-mile historic railroad corridor.

Currently there are 25 sculptures on the trail that winds through 9 acres of woods and open field are permanent installations, about 1/2 are permanent installations while the others have recently returned from, or are being readied for public art exhibitions.

Directions:  
From Floyd take Rt. 8 north for 4.3 miles and turn left on Ridge View Rd. In 6.5 miles turn right on Alum Ridge Rd. for 0.5 miles and turn left on Sawmill Hill Rd. In 1 mile turn right on Akers Rd. and find “Out There” 1/3 mile on the left.

From Interstate 81 take exit 114 south on Route 8 for about 12 miles and turn right on Alum Ridge Rd. 
Take Alum Ridge about 6 1/2 miles and turn right on Sawmill Hill Rd. In 1 mile turn right on Akers Rd. and find “Out There” 1/3 mile on the left.
