A workshop with Nancy Peacock

In writing fiction the author’s task is to cast a spell over the reader. This requires soothing the reader into a sort of trance, a river of story that the reader willingly steps into and is swept away in. Every reader comes to a story wanting this, but too often not finding it. In this workshop we will explore how to create the believable fictional world that story and reader can inhabit together, and we will examine what goes wrong with that, how to recognize it, and how to fix it to cast the fictional spell. Our tools will be readings, writing from prompts, and listening to and commenting on each others work.
Nancy Peacock’s first novel – LIFE WITHOUT WATER – was chosen as a New York Times Notable Book. She followed with a second novel and a memoir. Her next novel will be published in 2016 by Atria Press.
