3rd Annual NRV Mushroom Cultivation Workshop Fifth Kingdome Gardening

April 2, 2016 : 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

$40

Come join Gnomestead Hollow Farm and Forage for an awesome day of mushroom merriment and mycological musing as we explore the Fifth Kingdom in all of its garden glory!

This workshop will provide an excellent primer for low-tech/low-input mushroom cultivation in the garden and in the greenhouse. Participants will learn about the lifecycle and the ecology of fungi, and they will take away the knowledge and practicum of how to grow several species of delicious, gourmet mushrooms using common, household waste items and agricultural byproducts containing lignin and cellulose.

Topics will include propagating mushrooms in compost and in wood chips, growing mushrooms on suitable hardwoods and from kitchen waste, and selecting mushroom species for companion planting in the garden with your favorite spring, summer and fall veggies. We will also demonstrate and discuss how several species of fungi can rapidly build organic matter and increase soil fertility while additionally benefiting your plants in the greenhouse and in the garden beds.

This workshop will include a GYO Mushroom Kit, “The Gnomegrown” zine on Mushroom Growing (featuring our myco-inspired gnomenclature), and an incredible gnomemade meal featuring some of the most flavorful ferments and savory mushrooms this side of the continental divide. We will also provide our own Japanese Red Reishi and make a super-satisfying mushroom tea to pump up that prana en la maƱana!

We look forward to seeing you in the spring (April 2nd) at our 3rd annual New River Valley Mushroom Cultivation Workshop!
