Shapenote Singing Workshop

Join us Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 3:00-5:00pm for an Introduction to Shapenote Singing with Chris Wolf. Cost is $25.

Shapenote singing is a unique American-born, living tradition of unaccompanied four-part harmony singing. Learn about the origins of the singing style, the basics of reading music, the 4-shape notation system, how to hold your own in multipart harmony and the power of your singing voice. No experience or musical proficiency required.

Chris was born in Pennsylvania and has sung in choirs and musicals for most of his life. He and his partner Roxanne discovered shapenote singing in 2013 when they were living in Baltimore shortly before moving to southwestern Virginia. In addition to their love of music, they are passionate about agriculture and education. They have steeped themselves in the shapenote tradition and have been teaching it in Floyd since 2015, frequently traveling to large singings in the south.
