Orlene Hawks Puckett served as a midwife from 1889 until 1938. She lived with her husband John in the mountains of Patrick County and together they had 24 children, none who lived more than a few days. The Puckett Cabin sits along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 190. “Aunt Orlene“, as she was known, is said to have helped birth over 1000 babies. In 2012 Orlene Hawks Puckett was posthumously honored as one of the Library of Virginia’s “Virginia Women in History”.

Our speaker Phyllis Stump, a retired English teacher, spent many years researching the life of “Aunt Orlene“. She is author of the book “Called: The Story of a Mountain Midwife”, and has done numerous programs on “Aunt Orlene
