This band plays Honky Tonk, Outlaw Country and Appalachian Country.
The Dimestore Cowboys began in 2012 when lead singer James Brashears and bassist Jason Shaffer met at work in Bristol, TN. James, born in Middelsboro Kentucky and raised in around Harlan, KY and Tazwell, TN, has a strong southern baptist influence mixed with his love for early 90’s country music. He was a former rodeo clown (bull fighter) and 2004 APBA bullfighter of the year. Jason was born in Kingsport, TN, and has been around music his whole life, with family being from Hiltons, VA, right down the road from the Carter Fold, and all of them playing bluegrass and old time music. His love being mostly classic country and the Bakersfield sound. James had already written a few songs and they decided to try to put a band together. They met Jeff Waddell and he fit right in on lead guitar, and they were off and running. There have been several drummers over the years, but the mainstays is Collin McHenry,
The Dimestore Cowboys recorded their first single with a classic country sounding gospel tune “She Left Me for Jesus” in 2012 at The Sound Asylum and produced by Troy Whitson. It wasn’t until 2016 they would release their first full length album “Trend” which attracted a lot of attention. They are working now on writing songs for a new album which they hope to finish soon. Jeff has since left the band and newcomer Tyler Petty has joined in on lead guitar with all sorts of twangy telecaster lead work along with Lisa Pattison, an accomplished fiddle player. It is a pleasure to watch them as they trade off lead work effortlessly!
It seems that country music has evolved into more of a modern pop style sound and has lost its roots. The Dimestore Cowboys’ goal is to play country music as it was intended to be played by the pioneers of old. They are not really trying to start a new revolution, just trying to showcase the art of true country music. Don’t miss their first show at Dogtown!
