Liberation & Belonging in Community Through Song–ALL DAY SING
May 18, 2019 : 10:30 am - 3:00 pm
Join us for an all day singing from The Sacred Harp, the culminating event in the Springhouse Community School project with Tim Eriksen to explore the themes of liberation and belonging in community through song.
Leaders will be invited to offer 2-song lessons and are encouraged to speak to how the songs connect to their personal experiences of liberation and belonging.
Potluck dinner on the grounds
A free event, open to all, made possible with generous support from Virginia Humanities
Loneliness and social isolation are such pronounced problems that they might even be considered a public health crisis. As an antidote to these problems, we want to explore the ideas of liberation and belonging. What does it mean to be free? To what extent are we beholden to our context, and to what degree to we hold the keys to our own liberation? How are these ideas of liberation and belonging connected? With this project we will endeavor to explore these questions through song and through conversation in community.
Please join us for the other events connected to this project:
– Wednesday May 15th: a concert by Tim Eriksen at the Floyd Country Store
– Thursday May 16th: a morning song workshop with Tim Eriksen at Springhouse Community School, and an evening ‘practice’ singing with Floyd shape note singers
– Friday May 17th: a morning song workshop with Tim Eriksen at Springhouse Community School, and an evening presentation by Tim Eriksen on the project themes in the shape note tradition
