Floyd County Teachers K-5 can earn 40 hours of in-service credit at no charge

The Floyd Center for the Arts along with artist in residence, Wes McCune, are providing teacher workshop designed to give current Floyd Co. K-5 teachers skills in connecting music and art with the core disciplines of science and mathematics. By bringing creative thinking to your classrooms, students will be more engaged and ultimately improve student understanding and comprehension. “Full STEAM Ahead” is fund by a generous grant from The Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Goals
Floyd Co. public school teachers who participate in “Full STEAM Ahead” will gain skills in connecting the arts with science and mathematics, these skills will improve teachers abilities to bring core curriculum lessons to their students and will ultimately improve student understanding and comprehension
Outcomes:
Floyd Co. public school teachers who participate in “Full STEAM Ahead” will
• Gain new insights in connecting the arts with other disciplines.
• Design at least three art integrated lesson plans
• Bring their lessons to their classroom and will evaluate their effectiveness
• Meet in the late Fall 2019 to share their experience with other participants
• Receive 40 hours of in-service training credit.

About the Instructor
Wesley McCune, Floyd resident, is a classically trained pianist who retired from teaching in Alexandria City Public Schools from 1989-2016. He taught at John Adams Elementary School, a CETA (Changing Education through the Arts) partner school with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Last spring Wes led an art/music/math integrated workshop for children in grades K-5 at the Art Center. This workshop was highly successful and led to our development of this teacher workshop series.
