In this weekend workshop participants will use melted wax and fabric dyes to create a colorful and unique wall hanging, ready to hang. This class will focus on how to safely work with hot wax, the types of fabrics to use, proper blend of paraffin and beeswax needed to achieve the characteristic crackle effect of batik and the proper mixing and process for using Procion dyes on natural fibers. We will focus on the traditional immersion process of batik – after each wax layer, each piece will be fully submerged in the next color dye bath, producing yet another color (example – if the first dye bath is red, then the piece is submerged into a blue dye bath, the resulting color will be purple, not blue). Bring a drawing you would like to use, create an abstract design, or choose from several drawings, patterns and/or coloring books provided by the instructor. Drawing should be simple, not overly intricate. Children’s coloring book images work well. Students with prior batik classes are welcome to work on multiple projects and use this time as more of an ‘open studio’ opportunity.

About the Instructor:
Becky tried batik in high school art class and picked it up again several years later. Through books, batik supply ‘help lines’ and a whole lot of trial and error, she is a self-taught batik artist, specializing in vibrantly colored batik clothing and wall-hangings. She has sold her work at craft fairs and small shops since the early 1990s, and after years of practicing on friends, she started teaching batik more professionally in 2007. Batik can be a real lesson in letting go and learning to improvise. “There is no erasing when working with melted wax, bringing a very literal meaning to the phrase ‘go with the flow’!” -Becky Lattuca, Artist/Owner of Blue Ridge Batik
