Historic Rock Churches

The Rock Churches of Reverend Bob Childress

These six rock churches and the Indian Valley church were founded by Rev. Bob Childress, the subject of the book:

"The Man Who Moved A Mountain"

The most historic 6 rock churches of Virginia have been recognized as significant landmarks in Southwest Virginia in Floyd, Patrick & Carroll Counties.    Constructed of native stones from the Blue Ridge Mountains,  the beautiful rock churches were built in the first half of the 20th century under the leadership of Rev. Bob Childress. Made famous by the book The Man Who Moved a Mountain by Richard C. Davids (1970), these historic-but-active churches stand as living testimony to the spirit, faith and grit of the mountain people. . The three "rock churches" in Floyd County are Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church, Willis Baptist Church (formerly Presbyterian), and Indian Valley Presbyterian Church.
