Community Dance Night with Virginia Humanities

Join us at The Floyd Country Store on Thursday, September 10, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 9 pm for a special Community Dance event featuring lecture, screenings, music and dancing! Presented by Virginia Humanities’ Folklife Program and The Floyd Country Store.

Enjoy a night of music, lecture and demonstration celebrating local dance traditions at the Floyd Country Store with the Virginia Folklife Program of Virginia Humanities. At 5pm, Jason Rutledge of Ridgewind Suffolk Farm, Copper Hill and his apprentice, Lilliana Shelton of Floyd, will do a demonstration with his Suffolk Punch draft horses behind the store.

Following the draft horse demonstration will be a short screening inside the Store of “Somehow Hopeful: The Story of A Woodsman” and Virginia Humanities new video podcast “In Common.” The featured episode “Dance Revolution: The Crooked Road” showcases regulars at dances in Fries, Coeburn, and Blacksburg. After the screenings, regular dancers at the Floyd Country Store will be featured and local dance traditions will be shared in an interactive dance lesson workshop. Then, regional old time stringband, The Mustard Cutters will play two sets — the first set will get you flatfooting— the second set will be a square dance.
