SUMMARY:Liberty Tea- Kidney & Urinary Tract Class & Goldenrod Tincture Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This class will focus on the kidneys\, urinary tract\, the organs involved\, and how to use herbs to soothe\, tonify\, and clear-up infections.  Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are any bacterial infections of the bladder\, urethra\, or kidneys\, and are common in men\, women\, and children.  They are also one of the number one reasons antibiotics are prescribed.  One of the most plentiful\, beautiful\, yellow\, late summer herbs by roadsides and fields is the amazing Goldenrod.  We will take an in-depth look at the history\, folklore\, and medicinal uses of Goldenrod; and everyone will get to make a Goldenrod tincture to take home. \n(Among other uses – Goldenrod is a soothing tonic for the entire genito-urinary tract; useful as diuretic and antiseptic for treating bladder/kidney infections.)\nFYI – Goldenrod has a reputation for causing hay fever\, but allergies are rarely caused by insect-pollinated plants\, as their pollen is too big and heavy to get into your respiratory system. More inconspicuous wind-pollinated plants tend to be the problem. Ragweed has inconspicuous green flowers that bloom right about the time goldenrod does and it spreads its pollen on the wind so you can inhale it and sneeze. \nThe workshop would entail: \n-Small Plant ID Walk and discussion in EcoVillage Learning Garden (weather permitting) \n-Rules on Harvesting Sustainably and at peak potency \n-Information session on Kidney/Urinary Tract & the folklore\, history\, and medicinal uses of Goldenrod. \n-Tincture making class (Tinctures defined\, why tinctures\, how to make your own)\n-Hands on – each attendee makes a tincture to bring home (will need to macerate and be pressed at home)- plant material for tincture making will be supplied by I-TAL Acres.

In Ayurvedic medicine\, Tulsi is considered a tonic for the mind\, body\, and spirit. In western herbalism\, it is used for its diverse therapeutic benefits\, ranging from immune support to anti-inflammatory effects. Tulsi also serves as a symbol of connection to nature and holistic well-being. Now with five different distance options\, including gravel riding and a kids ride! \nIf you haven’t ridden your bike in Floyd\, you are in for a treat! There is plenty of climbing\, plenty of amazing views\, some easy miles and some very challenging stretches. This year’s ride will once again be starting at the Floyd Eco Village just outside the town. \nTour de Floyd is partnering with Red Rooster Coffee and Blue Mountain School to offer 6 aid stations\, including a coffee station at the start (featuring Red Rooster)\, the old classic “Cookie Station”\, and 5 other stations to be sure you get to the end with plenty of gas left in the tank. After the ride\, stick around for chili and cornbread and a cash bar. Riders eat free. Guests are welcome to purchase a bowl of chili — every penny goes back to the school. \nAll proceeds go to benefit Blue Mountain School\, a 44 year old contemplative progressive school in Floyd VA.

DESCRIPTION:Liberty Tea- Kidney and Urinary Tract Class & Goldenrod Tincture Making Workshop\, September 13\, 2024 from 12-2 pm at the Floyd EcoVillage Farm Store. \nThis class will focus on the kidneys\, urinary tract\, the organs involved\, and how to use herbs to soothe\, tonify\, and clear-up infections.  Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are any bacterial infections of the bladder\, urethra\, or kidneys\, and are common in men\, women\, and children.  They are also one of the number one reasons antibiotics are prescribed.  One of the most plentiful\, beautiful\, yellow\, late summer herbs by roadsides and fields is the amazing Goldenrod.  We will take an in-depth look at the history\, folklore\, and medicinal uses of Goldenrod; and everyone will get to make a Goldenrod tincture to take home. \n(Among other uses – Goldenrod is a soothing tonic for the entire genito-urinary tract; useful as diuretic and antiseptic for treating bladder/kidney infections.)\nFYI – Goldenrod has a reputation for causing hay fever\, but allergies are rarely caused by insect-pollinated plants\, as their pollen is too big and heavy to get into your respiratory system. More inconspicuous wind-pollinated plants tend to be the problem. DESCRIPTION:Purchasing a one-time\, one-person registration for the Herbal Infused Oils & Salve Making Class\, May 17\, 12-2 pm\, at the Floyd EcoVillage Farm Store. \nApplying herbs topically\, as infused oils or salves\, is one of the many ways we can utilize herbs for health and healing.  We will discuss several methods of extracting herbs in oil and how to do so\, including a demonstration preparing an herb for oil extraction.  These infused herbal oils can be used as is\, or made into healing herbal salves.  We will collectively make an herbal salve in class\, and each attendee will take home a container of salve made in the class. \nThe workshop would entail: \n-Small Plant ID Walk and discussion in EcoVillage Learning Garden (weather permitting) \n-Rules on Harvesting Sustainably and at peak potency \n-Oils/Salve making class & notes\n-Hands on – each attendee will take home a jar of salve made in class. Note- depending on weather and availability of herbs\, plant material for salve making will either be supplied by I-TAL Acres or we will harvest them onsite as needed.\n-Demonstration of how to make an infused herbal oil. \n-Info on how to make tinctures. \nPlease bring sunglasses/hat/sunscreen as we will be outside at least part of the time.

DESCRIPTION:Red Rooster is reviving the Tour de Floyd\, a popular annual metric century (100km) bike ride to raise funds for Blue Mountain School\, a 44-year old contemplative progressive school in Floyd\, VA. The ride will take place on Saturday\, May 17th\, with a starting time of 8:30am for the traditional route. In addition to the “Classic\,” there will also be four other routes available ranging from the “Dirty” all gravel ride to a short 5k for young bike enthusiasts. \nThis year’s ride will be starting at the Floyd Eco Village located at 188 Eco Village Trail\, Floyd VA just outside the Town of Floyd. Red Rooster Coffee will welcome all riders with a complimentary breakfast and coffee upon arrival\, as well as a full espresso bar. Start the ride with freshly brewed\, locally-roasted coffee\, alongside a selection of delicious and energizing quick eats. Blue Mountain School is also excited to host 5 aid stations. The aid stations along the race routes will embody the spirit of Blue Mountain School. Each class from Blue Mountain School will take ownership of a station\, providing a unique experience as riders stop to refuel and recharge. SUMMARY:Mindful Living\, Soulful Aging Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“The gold of age is a rich harvest\, one that’s born in darkness and brought to light. Mining the gold of the inner life is a living practice with a guiding seam and a deepening to forge. And what will you spend your gold on? Your time\, your life? Every person’s inner gold accrues interest when shared.” –Colleen Redman \nThe inner life regularly calls for our attention\, but it takes a real commitment to bring our focus within when so much grabs our attention in the routines of daily living. Whether or not you have been able to do your inner work along the way\, we are inviting elders and adults of all ages who are motivated now for prioritizing their inner work to come together in a co-creative community. This retreat will provide opportunities for silent meditation and reflection\, along with stimulating presentations and workshops on the processes of living with awareness and aging with grace. \nParticipants will be supported to explore and express your inner life through poetry\, creative writing\, guided imagery and music\, dance\,small group discussions and mandala art. There will be a featured poetry reading on the theme of soulful aging titled: Mining the Gold / Spending the Treasure with Colleen Redman and Katherine Chantal. Their original poems blend memoir\, dream work\, mythology and contemplative reflection on meeting the challenge of “apprenticing ourselves to our own disappearance\,” as coined by poet David Whyte. \nEach day will offer a balance of guided offerings and free time for inner exploration inside the Bermed Lodge and out in the forest and trails surrounding the Floyd EcoVillage. You will have time for tuning in\, and renewing and deepening your skills in the practices of soulful aging and mindful living. Delicious meals\, snacks and beverages provided throughout the retreat. \nRetreat is open to adults of all ages. All levels of experience welcome! \nPresenter Bios: \nJoe Klein\, LPC\, is the founder of Be Well Now and a lead teacher for Instill Mindfulness & Inward Bound Mindfulness. Joe has been teaching mindfulness since 2010\, including a graduate course at Radford University\, and previously led Recovery Dojo\, a mindfulness-based addiction treatment program. He brings playfulness\, Earth connection\, and whole-person engagement to his retreats\, creating a deeply immersive and transformative experience. \nColleen Redman is a Floyd County writer/blogger who contracted and freelanced news stories\, features and photographs for The Floyd Press from 2006 – 2021. Her poetry has most recently been published in Artemis Journal and Floyd County Moonshine. She is the author of several books of poetry and has been a featured reader at Floyd’s Little River Poetry Festival. \nKatherine Chantal has been navigating her life through relationship and transitions. Being Mother\, herbalist\, healer\, creator of life passage ceremonies and evolutionary workshops for decades\, she comes to her elder years as an author of five books. She is a philosopher poet inclusive of depth psychology\, spirituality and neuroscience. Her poems have appeared in Artemis Journal and other regional publications. She is the author of several books\, including two poetry collections. \nJessica Talley-Haynes\, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)\, FAMI\, CNIT\, FMCHC \nJess owns a holistically-based counseling practice in Floyd\, specializing in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery & Music (GIM)\, Circles of the Self Assessment\, Polyvagal psychoeducation\, support for High Sensory Intelligence\, outdoor and walk & talk therapy\, and mindfulness backpacking experiences. She developed and runs a Functional Medicine health coaching group for the Recovery Dojo\, supporting clients in understanding the mind-body connection through food and lifestyle choices. Jess provides psychoeducation and experiential therapies that highlight and strengthen connections between physical\, emotional\, environmental\, relational\, and spiritual health and has been working with non-ordinary states of consciousness through music for over 10 years. Jess brings curiosity\, compassion\, and zest to her work helping others find comfort with their authentic selves and nurture deeper connections with Nature.
