DESCRIPTION:Purchasing a one-time\, one-person registration for the Herbal Infused Oils & Salve Making Class\, May 17\, 12-2 pm\, at the Floyd EcoVillage Farm Store. \nApplying herbs topically\, as infused oils or salves\, is one of the many ways we can utilize herbs for health and healing.  We will discuss several methods of extracting herbs in oil and how to do so\, including a demonstration preparing an herb for oil extraction.  These infused herbal oils can be used as is\, or made into healing herbal salves.  We will collectively make an herbal salve in class\, and each attendee will take home a container of salve made in the class. \nThe workshop would entail: \n-Small Plant ID Walk and discussion in EcoVillage Learning Garden (weather permitting) \n-Rules on Harvesting Sustainably and at peak potency \n-Oils/Salve making class & notes\n-Hands on – each attendee will take home a jar of salve made in class. Note- depending on weather and availability of herbs\, plant material for salve making will either be supplied by I-TAL Acres or we will harvest them onsite as needed.\n-Demonstration of how to make an infused herbal oil. \n-Info on how to make tinctures. \nPlease bring sunglasses/hat/sunscreen as we will be outside at least part of the time.

DESCRIPTION:Red Rooster is reviving the Tour de Floyd\, a popular annual metric century (100km) bike ride to raise funds for Blue Mountain School\, a 44-year old contemplative progressive school in Floyd\, VA. The ride will take place on Saturday\, May 17th\, with a starting time of 8:30am for the traditional route. In addition to the “Classic\,” there will also be four other routes available ranging from the “Dirty” all gravel ride to a short 5k for young bike enthusiasts. \nThis year’s ride will be starting at the Floyd Eco Village located at 188 Eco Village Trail\, Floyd VA just outside the Town of Floyd. Red Rooster Coffee will welcome all riders with a complimentary breakfast and coffee upon arrival\, as well as a full espresso bar. Start the ride with freshly brewed\, locally-roasted coffee\, alongside a selection of delicious and energizing quick eats. Blue Mountain School is also excited to host 5 aid stations. The aid stations along the race routes will embody the spirit of Blue Mountain School. Each class from Blue Mountain School will take ownership of a station\, providing a unique experience as riders stop to refuel and recharge. From class themed decorations to refreshing treats\, including the old classic “cookie station”\, each aid station will provide a memorable boost to keep riders motivated and connect them to the Blue Mountain School community. \nRegistration is available online at www.BikeReg.com/tour-de-floyd-2025 through May 16th\, with early-bird pricing available until March 31st. The jam is open and free for everyone. \n12:00pm – 1:00pm: Old-Time Beginner Jam in the Floyd Country Store Community Room\n1:30pm – 3:30pm: Old-Time Music Jam\n4:00pm – 5:30pm: Bluegrass Jam \nJoin us for old time beginner jams from 12:00 to 1:00 in the Floyd Country Store Community Room. The old time jam session starts at 1:30 and is hosted by a different string band each week\, leading tunes at a moderate speed. Traditional instruments and dancers welcome! At 4:00 the bluegrass jam kicks off\, with hosts who lead the group in bluegrass songs and tunes. Song selections and solos pass around the circle. Sunday Music Jams are a great way to see traditional music the way it has been played and handed down for centuries\, amongst friends and family in a community setting.

Admission is $15 at the door or online at the link below – $10 for friends and fixtures (with a card.) \n\nABOUT TWIN CREEKS STRINGBAND\nIn the late 1970s\, a group of neighbors and friends got together to play the music that had been passed down in the Dry Hill and Ferrum areas of Franklin County. Some of the musicians were falling behind on their timing one day while playing and having some fun\, and one spectator commented that he was going to call the group the Dry Hill Draggers. Banjo player Jimmy Boyd and his brother Billy Boyd started the official Dry Hill Draggers band in 1981. The group flourished\, and more than thirty years later\, some of the Dry Hill Draggers members formed Twin Creeks Stringband\, including Jared Boyd\, grandson of Jimmy Boyd\, a third generation claw-hammer banjo player; his dad Stacy Boyd on upright bass; Jason Hambrick on guitar and vocals; and Chris Prillaman on fiddle. Twin Creeks Stringband has a particularly driving old-time beat that is irresistible to dancers\, and they are popular performers at the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival\, as well as at the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention. \n\nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:Limberjack Dancing & Decorating Workshop with Linda Ray
DESCRIPTION:The Handmade Music School presents Limberjack Decorating & Dancing with Linda Ray at the Floyd Country Store on Saturday\, May 10th\, 2025 from 3:30-5:30pm. Cost is $45 and includes a limberjack. This workshop is great for adults and/or children. Children age 8 and over are welcome with an accompanying adult\, age 10 and over without an accompanying adult. \n\n  \nThis workshop is a fabulous chance to dress\, paint and decorate your own special doll\, and then learn how to make them dance to the music. The first half of the workshop will be craft time followed by learning a few techniques to make the limberjack dance. Paint\, fabric\, and other materials will be provided. \nSpace is limited to 10 so sign up early! \nHistory of the Limberjack\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, Americans had many forms of home entertainment. Many of these involved the playing and enjoying of music. Jig dolls\, or limberjacks as they are sometimes called\, are one form of folk art that came out of this musical tradition. A jig doll is a jointed wooden figure that was attached to a rod and panel\, and could be manipulated by the player of an instrument or someone moving the doll to the tune of the music. The history of these dolls goes back hundreds of years\, with the first being used by itinerant Italian street performers to animate their shows. Many European countries had their own version of the jig doll. This form was brought to America with settlers and immigrants\, and it developed into a distinctive American form. Jig dolls could be carved or turned\, and were often painted to reflect a character or stereotypical image. They usually had both jointed arms and legs which flailed either wildly when moved or in a dancing motion\, depending on the skill of the handler! Jog dolls can be seen in folk art collections and have been recognized and collected as such. \n\nREGISTER HERE
