At 4:00 the bluegrass jam kicks off\, with hosts who lead the group in bluegrass songs and tunes. Song selections and solos pass around the circle. Sunday Music Jams are a great way to see traditional music the way it has been played and handed down for centuries\, amongst friends and family in a community setting.

SEE THE LINK BELOW \n\n\nABOUT WAYNE HENDERSON\nWayne Henderson was born in Grayson County\, Virginia\, where he lives today. He is a full-time instrument builder and musician\, specializing in building guitars\, and playing in a unique finger-picking style. Though he has lived in Virginia all of his life\, Henderson has played countless performances in Western North Carolina\, been a member of Western North Carolina bands\, and influenced many regional musicians\, through both his music and craft. He developed a unique style of using a thumbpick and fingerpicks\, making his playing sound like flatpicking\, with fast\, accurate\, and clean notes. \nHenderson’s father and uncle were musicians who played with Estil Ball\, an admired finger-style guitar player from the area who influenced Wayne’s playing. Inspired by Ball\, Wayne ordered a cheap guitar from the Sears catalogue. Disappointed with that instrument\, he decided to build his own guitar\, out of a used dresser drawer bottom. When he struggled to find the proper glue for his newly crafted instrument\, he sought out the advice of a neighbor\, Albert Hash\, who built fiddles and other instruments. With Hash’s encouragement\, Wayne continued working on his instrument building. \nHe sold his second guitar in exchange for some tools and cash. “Ever since\,” he says\, “somebody’s wanted one as soon as I get it finished.” For years he worked as a rural mail carrier\, spending his off-time performing and building guitars and other instruments. He has become so famous that he has a long backlog of orders placed for guitars. Henderson has built guitars for Doc Watson\, Gillian Welch\, Peter Rowan\, and Eric Clapton. \nABOUT PRESLEY BARKER\nTraphill\, North Carolina\, native Presley Barker plays country/blues music and is a singer/songwriter. Presley was particularly fond of Doc Watson\, and started playing guitar at seven years old\, It did not take him long to start getting the hang of the instrument and catching the attention of the local music community. Soon\, Presley started taking lessons with Steve Lewis\, a past winner of the prestigious Winfield National Guitar Championship. Presley also made frequent trips to Grayson County\, Virginia\, to meet with guitar builder and player Wayne Henderson. \nPresley also traveled around the region to fiddlers conventions. He started entering guitar competitions and bringing home lots of blue ribbons. In 2015\, at age 10\, Presley won the Old Fiddler’s Convention Adult guitar competition in Galax\, Virginia and won a second time in 2017.  In 2017\, Presley also won the prestigious Wayne C. Henderson Guitar Championship. While Presley says that the Galax blue ribbon was one of his most prized awards\, the competitions are not as important as playing music with friends. \nPresley sings and plays guitar at his local church\, and gives performances at concert venues and festivals around the region. \nHe has appeared on the NBC Today Show with Al Roker. He has played the National Folk Festival\, Richmond Folk Festival\, Lowell Folk Festival\, Montana Folk Festival\, Masters of Steel String Guitar Event in Washington\, D.C.\, PBS Song of the Mountains Show\, Doc Watson Day Celebration in Boone\, NC\, David Holt’s State of Music\, Blue Ridge Music Center\, Silver Dollar City\, Dollywood\, Houstonfest\, Carolina In The Fall\, and Merlefest. Presley also appeared on NBC’s “Little Big Shots” with Steve Harvey and “Wonderama” TV show in New York City. Most recently\, Presley was invited by Country Music Hall of Fame and Bluegrass Hall of Fame member Ricky Skaggs to play the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville\, TN. Presley released his first solo album entitled “JUST-TEN” in the fall of 2015 and is now working with Dolly Parton’s producer and Grammy Nominated Kent Wells Productions in Nashville TN to release some new music coming soon. \n\nCan’t make it to the show? Redd will spend the afternoon discussing and demonstrating how to find the musicality within your instrument and within yourself. How to unlock the mysteries of the fingerboard (no matter what instrument you play) and how to make the best of your musical journey and be a musician that everyone wants to play with. \nCost is $35. Workshop is a minimum of 90 minutes in length. \n\n  \nThis workshop is intended for intermediate and advanced musicians who play any string instrument\, with a focus on guitar. We’ll listen to Redd’s wisdom and enjoy some demonstrations – it is not necessary to bring your own instrument to this workshop. \nFrom country and western-swing to jazz and rock\, Redd Volkaert is considered a true giant of country music and the Telecaster guitar. DESCRIPTION:Purchasing a one-time\, one-person registration for the Medicinal Power of Culinary Herbs & Thieves Tincture Making Workshop\, August 9\, 2024 from 12-2 pm at the Floyd EcoVillage Farm Store. \nWhen we think of medicinal herbs\, how many think to include culinary herbs among the list of powerful plant allies?  Food as medicine\, medicine as food.  We know culinary herbs improve the taste of our foods\, but did you know they contain many health benefits and medicinal uses?  The ancient thieves during the time of the plague knew this\, and their use of culinary herbs as immune booster became legendary.  Let us harvest the power of summer as an immune booster for later.  We will explore the medicinal folk uses and history of some of our main culinary herbs\, and everyone will get to make their own ‘Thieves’ tincture.\nThe workshop would entail: \n-Small Plant ID Walk and discussion in EcoVillage Learning Garden (weather permitting) \n-Rules on Harvesting Sustainably and at peak potency \n-Information session on folklore\, history\, and medicinal uses of main culinary herbs. \n-Tincture making class (Tinctures defined\, why tinctures\, how to make your own)\n-Hands on – each attendee makes a tincture to bring home (will need to macerate and be pressed at home)- plant material for tincture making will be supplied by I-TAL Acres. \nSupplies: \n-Bowls/Cutting boards/Knives/Scissors to coarsely chop herbs before making tincture  (we will have some scissors/pruners/cutting boards\, but bring if you have/remember)\n-Mason jar or other jar to make tincture (we will have them on hand\, but bring one if you have -peanut butter/pasta jar size is usually ideal) \n-Sunglasses/hat/sunscreen/water bottle – we will be outside at least part of the time
