His mastery of Monroe’s genre-bending style has been featured on recordings with a wide range of performers — from rock stars Sting\, Gregg Allman and Elvis Costello – to more traditional bluegrass and old-time music artists such as John Hartford\, Ralph Stanley\, David Grisman\, Norman Blake\, Doc Watson and Peter Rowan. \nCompton is a musician’s musician teaching Monroe Mandolin Classes each summer in the mountains of North Carolina. He collaborated with legendary producer T-Bone Burnett on the Album of the Year soundtrack for “O Brother Where Art Thou?” and has performed as a pivotal member of many groups including the Nashville Blue Grass Band\, the John Hartford Stringband\, the Helen Highwater Stringband. 1942 and Compton & Newberry. Compton’s impressive discography of over 140 albums includes recordings by Dolly Parton\, Patti Lovelace and Willie Nelson. \nLaura Boosinger \nLaura Boosinger began her banjo career at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa\, NC\, under the tutelage of renowned musician David Holt. She is a student and teacher of Appalachian Music and Studies playing with the Luke Smathers Band\, David Holt and the Lightning Bolts and the Midnight Plowboys. She has collaborated with musicians across the spectrum – from George Shuttler\, guitarist and bass player for the Stanley Brothers\, to Josh  Goforth\, one of her early students who has made a well-deserved name for himself in the world of Bluegrass. \nLaura has been instrumental in maintaining the tradition of shaped note singing from the Christian Harmony in workshops at Merlefest\, Blue Ridge Old Time Music Week  and the Earl Scruggs Center. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 2025 Floyd County All-Day Shape Note Sing! There will be a potluck dinner on the grounds. Full kitchen and ADA bathrooms on site. Social to follow. \nShape note singing is an American tradition of unaccompanied harmony singing with roots stretching back to the Colonial period. It takes its name from the musical notation system to aid in sight-singing\, where notes are written on the page with different shapes\, each corresponding to the degree of the scale. Characterized by open harmonies and a raw\, powerful sound\, the tradition of shape note singing encourages enthusiasm over accuracy and the music is designed primarily for participation\, rather than performance. \nWe’ll be singing from The Sacred Harp (1991 Denson)\, The Shenandoah Harmony and The Valley Pocket Harmonist tunebooks. No experience is necessary and loaner books are available — everyone is welcome!

DESCRIPTION:Every Sunday afternoon The Floyd Country Store comes alive with community music during our old time and bluegrass music jams. Bring your instrument and join in the music or grab some food and be our audience! The jam is open and free for everyone. \n12:00pm – 1:00pm: Old-Time Beginner Jam in the Floyd Country Store Community Room\n1:30pm – 3:30pm: Old-Time Music Jam\n4:00pm – 5:30pm: Bluegrass Jam \nJoin us for old time beginner jams from 12:00 to 1:00 in the Floyd Country Store Community Room. The old time jam session starts at 1:30 and is hosted by a different string band each week\, leading tunes at a moderate speed. Traditional instruments and dancers welcome! At 4:00 the bluegrass jam kicks off\, with hosts who lead the group in bluegrass songs and tunes. Song selections and solos pass around the circle. Sunday Music Jams are a great way to see traditional music the way it has been played and handed down for centuries\, amongst friends and family in a community setting.
