The FUN and developmentally appropriate classes foster a love of music while building foundational musical skills\, safe connection\, secure attachment\, and healthy community. \nKari’s welcoming attitude helps adults and children build a sense of community while they gather on the rug for fingerplays and lap bouncing games\, play with rhythm instruments\, jump\, crawl\, and swing\, wave scarves to choreographed dances\, and freeform jam with a menagerie of instruments. It feels so good to be in class\, children don’t even notice that they are building the foundational skills for making music together the rest of their lives. \nHCME has been literally raising Floyd County children with its Social and Emotional Learning based music program since it began. It still serves Floyd’s youngest members (birth to 5 years old) while watching its first students graduate from high school. One high school senior recently told Kari\, “I don’t remember much about preschool\, but I remember your music!” \nHeart of the Child Music students consistently pursue music creation as they get older\, fed by the love of music that HCME nurtures in them in their early years. DESCRIPTION:Henry Hardt’s Mudcats are Jeff Liverman\, Jeremia Dwier\, Barb Gillespie\, Ray Braley and Will Norton. The band sings and plays Piedmont and old time street blues\, reveling in music penned earlier in the 20th century\, from Charlie Pool to Muddy Water to Robert Johnson and the Mississippi Sheiks. The Mudcat’s specialize in illuminating the influence that old style street music including blues and jug band sounds had on modern Rock and Roll. They play songs made popular by such artists as Rolling Stones\, Bob Dylan\, Nirvanas and Eric Clapton but they play in the style of the original recordings from the 1920s and 30s. Henry Hardt’s Mudcats are a fun\, danceable look back at some of the most influential music of the last three generations.

Hauntingly stark\, sweetly sentimental\, or just plain fun\, these old songs tell the stories of people’s lives. Ron & Donna treat these treasures with the love and respect of honest\, straightforward arrangements inspired by the old masters of parlor\, dance hall\, and backwoods. \nDonna has been singing for as long as she can remember\, and is internationally acclaimed for her warm tone and direct delivery of songs\, which has won awards and praise from audiences and critics across the globe.  Known primarily as a lutenist today\, Ron’s first instrument was the banjo. A founding member of the Portland Folklore Society\, he was a driving force behind Portland\, Oregon’s now burgeoning square dance scene. Ron toured with Piedmont songster\, John Jackson\, played in bands with Kerry Blech\, Jon Bekoff\, and Andy Cohen\, and was fiddler for the band Pig Iron\, which later morphed into today’s band Foghorn.

Bring your instrument and join in the music or grab some food and be our audience! The jam is open and free for everyone. \n12:00pm – 1:00pm: Old-Time Beginner Jam in the Floyd Country Store Community Room\n1:30pm – 3:30pm: Old-Time Music Jam\n4:00pm – 5:30pm: Bluegrass Jam \nJoin us for old time beginner jams from 12:00 to 1:00 in the Floyd Country Store Community Room. The old time jam session starts at 1:30 and is hosted by a different string band each week\, leading tunes at a moderate speed. Traditional instruments and dancers welcome! At 4:00 the bluegrass jam kicks off\, with hosts who lead the group in bluegrass songs and tunes. Song selections and solos pass around the circle. Sunday Music Jams are a great way to see traditional music the way it has been played and handed down for centuries\, amongst friends and family in a community setting.

But even as band members have stepped in and out of various roles\, what’s most important is what hasn’t changed: an undeniable knack for blending both old and new music and traditions without sacrificing what makes either potent and durable. Their current iteration is a true blue lineup: guitarist mandolin player Lou Reid\, bassist Ronnie Simpkins\, banjoist and fiddler Ron Stewart\, dobro player Fred Travers\, and guitarist Clay Hess. \nSince they started up together in 1971\, The Seldom Scene has dexterously performed original and traditional songs while presenting fiery and soulful reinterpretations of material by Merle Haggard\, James Taylor\, and more. The concept of bluegrass unshackling itself from a conservative\, straight-ahead mindset seems like a given now\, when some of its biggest stars fill stadiums and cross over with mainstream audiences\, but the continued presence of the Scene acts as a reminder that it wasn’t always so.
