Aikido training also focuses on the flow of energy and the dynamics of movement and encourages partners to train together cooperatively. It takes its name from the musical notation system to aid in sight-singing where notes are written on the page with different shapes\, each corresponding to the degree of the scale. There are no concerts — we sing for the fun of singing! \nTunebooks we sing from are The Sacred Harp (1991/2025 Denson edition)\, The Shenandoah Harmony\, and The Valley Pocket Harmonist. Bring your instrument and join in the music or grab some food and be our audience! \nTHE MUSIC STARTS AT 1:30pm and it is open to the public and free for everyone! \nSunday Music Jams are a great way to see traditional music the way it has been played and handed down for centuries\, amongst friends and family in a community setting. \nThe OLD TIME JAM session takes place from 1:30 – 3:30 pm in the area just in front of our stage and is hosted by a different string band each week\, leading tunes at a moderate speed. Traditional instruments and dancers welcome! \nThe BLUEGRASS JAM takes place from 4:00 – 5:30 pm\, with hosts who lead the group in bluegrass songs and tunes. Song selections and solos pass around the circle.

His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker\, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes\, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Jake Blount’s new album\, The New Faith\, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways (coming September 23\, 2022). The New Faith is spiritual music\, filled with hope for salvation and righteous anger in equal measure. The album manifests our worst fears on the shores of an island in Maine\, where Blount enacts an imagined religious ceremony performed by Black refugees after the collapse of global civilization due to catastrophic climate change. Jake Blount’s music is rooted in care and confrontation. On stage\, each song he and his band play is chosen for a reason – because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment. The more we learn about where we’ve been\, the better equipped we are to face the future. \nHUBBY JENKINS \nHubby Jenkins is a talented multi-instrumentalist who endeavors to share his love and knowledge of old-time American music. Born and raised in Brooklyn he delved into his southern roots\, following the thread of African American history that wove itself through America’s traditional music forms. DESCRIPTION:This class will focus on the kidneys\, urinary tract\, the organs involved\, and how to use herbs to soothe\, tonify\, and clear-up infections.  Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are any bacterial infections of the bladder\, urethra\, or kidneys\, and are common in men\, women\, and children.  They are also one of the number one reasons antibiotics are prescribed.  One of the most plentiful\, beautiful\, yellow\, late summer herbs by roadsides and fields is the amazing Goldenrod.  We will take an in-depth look at the history\, folklore\, and medicinal uses of Goldenrod; and everyone will get to make a Goldenrod tincture to take home. \n(Among other uses – Goldenrod is a soothing tonic for the entire genito-urinary tract; useful as diuretic and antiseptic for treating bladder/kidney infections.)\nFYI – Goldenrod has a reputation for causing hay fever\, but allergies are rarely caused by insect-pollinated plants\, as their pollen is too big and heavy to get into your respiratory system. More inconspicuous wind-pollinated plants tend to be the problem. Ragweed has inconspicuous green flowers that bloom right about the time goldenrod does and it spreads its pollen on the wind so you can inhale it and sneeze. \nThe workshop would entail: \n-Small Plant ID Walk and discussion in EcoVillage Learning Garden (weather permitting) \n-Rules on Harvesting Sustainably and at peak potency \n-Information session on Kidney/Urinary Tract & the folklore\, history\, and medicinal uses of Goldenrod. \n-Tincture making class (Tinctures defined\, why tinctures\, how to make your own)\n-Hands on – each attendee makes a tincture to bring home (will need to macerate and be pressed at home)- plant material for tincture making will be supplied by I-TAL Acres.
