DESCRIPTION:Want to have your soup and keep your bowl too? The annual Empty Bowls fundraising event will be held on Sunday\, April 28\, 2024 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Floyd County High School. Empty Bowls supports NRCA’s Floyd County Backpack Program. The Backpack Program has served Floyd County students in all five schools and NRCA Head Start this school year with over 3\,800 meals provided each month to students that could likely otherwise go hungry over the weekend.\nEach adult ticket holder can pick out a handmade ceramic bowl made by a local potter. All guests receive soup\, bread\, dessert and a drink to enjoy with live music. Ticket prices are $25 for adults\, $10 for children age 6-12 (no bowl)\, age 5 and under are free (no bowl). Ticket are available to purchase in person at multiple sales locations in Floyd and online. Ticket sales information will be posted on the Floyd Back Program page – https://www.facebook.com/FloydBackPack/\nIf you are unable to attend the event\, but would like to contribute\, donors may send tax-deductible contributions for the Backpack Program to New River Community Action\, PO Box 849\, Floyd\, VA 24091 or deliver donations to the NRCA Emergency Assistance Office at 323 Floyd Highway South. Donors should make checks payable to NRCA and note Floyd County Backpack Program (FCBP) in the memo section. There are endless right-hand techniques and ideas on the banjo that can be used to augment and support singing in both solo and band settings. Remember\, everyone can sing! Join Corbin to listen to historic recordings of pickers past and try your hand at these techniques. This workshop is recommended for intermediate and advanced players. \nAbout Corbin Hayslett:\nCorbin Hayslett grew up around his father and mother’s musical talents in religious and secular music. From an early age\, he was singing and cultivating a passion for bluegrass\, old time\, and traditional Americana and southern musical forms. He has won multiple competitions in banjo and vocals throughout Virginia\, West Virginia\, and North Carolina. Corbin now manages County Sales in downtown Floyd and performs with Nobody’s Business. “Traditional music has been the mainstay of my from my earliest memories. My Dad taught me to love and sing like The Stanley Brothers while I was in a car seat and my mom sat me on the front-row pew during choir rehearsals. The music of Virginia’s mountains has been passed down in my family for nine generations. I’ve had the honor of playing mountain music in three hemispheres and on stages ranging from the Floyd Country Store to the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures.\nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. DESCRIPTION:Come visit beautiful Crooked Mountain’s farm for a free educational event focusing on small farm conservation\, with special emphasis on water. Small farm conservation experts and resources from Virginia State University’s Small Farm Outreach Program\, Virginia Tech\, and other local farm resources will be on hand to answer questions about farming\, conservation\, and on-farm water retention. A presentation at 2:30 will be followed by a guided tour of the pond\, campground\, and cut flower field plans for this year. \nIn the last two years\, Brian and Christy Corbett have developed Crooked Mountain into a multi-purpose recreation and flower farm. They recently added a spring-fed agricultural pond to their campground area. A second small retention pond will provide water for pick-your-own sunflowers\, zinnias\, and other flowers. PFF was instrumental in building the park\, along with Dodd Creek Tail and the Park to Library Trail\, as well as sponsoring many Earth Days and Health Fairs in service to our community.
