Tickets are $32 general admission\, $36 reserved seating\, available for sale online and in the store. \n\nABOUT MARK & MAGGIE O’CONNOR\nMark O’Connor began his creative journey at the feet of American fiddling legend Benny Thomasson\, and the iconic French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli. Now\, at age 59\, he has melded these influences into a new American classical music\, and is perpetuating his vision of an American School of String Playing. Mr. O’Connor has won three Grammys\, seven CMA awards as well as several national fiddle\, guitar and mandolin champion titles. His distinguished career includes representing the United States Information Agency in cultural diplomacy to six continents and performing in front of several U.S. presidents including being invited to the White House by President Ronald Reagan to perform as a teen. \nAfter recording a series of albums for Rounder and Warner Bros including his multiple Grammy-winning New Nashville Cats\, his recordings for Sony Classical with Yo-Yo Ma\, Appalachia Waltz and Appalachian Journey sold a million CDs and gained O’Connor worldwide recognition as a leading proponent of a new American musical idiom. \nMr. O’Connor’s Fiddle Concerto released on Warner Bros. has become the most-performedviolin concerto composed in the last 50 years. On his own OMAC Records label\, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra recorded his sweeping Americana Symphony while his groundbreaking 9th concerto\, The Improvised Violin Concerto was recorded in Boston Symphony Hall. The MarkO’Connor Band consisting of family members (wife\, son and daughter-in-law) debuted at #1 on Billboard Magazine’s bluegrass album chart and their first album Coming Home won a Grammy in 2017. The band released a live album called A Musical Legacy. Mr. O’Connor’s new solo guitar album Markology II is a 42-year sequel to the first one released when he was 16. Bela Fleck writes the album notes for the new CD. He says: \n“…a bit stunned at the shear technical bravado his guitar playing is capable of (including that bit of jealousy that I’ve always had at how well this guy’s hands work!). Great tone he pulls from his guitars…puts us mortal musicians into a state of awe.” \nMr. O’Connor has authored a series of educational books called the O’Connor Method and is now the fastest growing violin method in the country and tens of thousands can credit the O’Connor books for learning how to play stringed instruments. What I find so special about her\, apart from the sheer soulfulness abundant in the music she makes\, is her uncanny sense of playing off of and with Mark\, knowing when to assert herself and when to be empathetic and supportive.” \nGrowing up in a musical family in the suburbs of Atlanta GA\, Maggie started playing the violin at age 7 in a family band. Concurrently\, she took classical violin lessons with Larisa Morgulis\, a distinguished graduate of the Odessa Conservatory in Ukraine. Playing music with her family band is where Maggie began to develop an ear for arranging\, recording\, group playing\, and improvisation; skills she has embraced throughout her musical life. In her early years\, she was a member of numerous bluegrass and rock bands while also being a member and soloist with Atlanta’s top three youth orchestras. \nAfter growing up playing American and classical music styles\, Maggie continued her professional training at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where she studied with violinist Herbert Greenberg earning the Bachelor and the Master of Music degrees in violin performance. She was also a finalist in the Marbury Prize Competition for Undergraduate Violinists while finishing up her Bachelor’s degree with distinction and had the honor of being accepted into the Five Year Advanced Degree Program along with being awarded the Career Development Grant while at Peabody. She was the recipient of full tuition scholarships while studying at the Aspen Music Festival and School for three years. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. This class will focus on how to connect with a partner and learn to hear the music. Tickets are $15 general admission\, $20 reserved seating\, available for sale online and in the store. \n\nJoin us for an evening of bluegrass music from some of our local favorites. \nLonesome Heart is a newly formed bluegrass band out of southwest Virginia who play traditional and original bluegrass music. Nikki Wright plays fiddle and sings with the group and has appeared with previous bands such as Johnny & Jeanette Williams Band and Adam McPeak and Mountain Thunder.  Scott Patrick plays guitar\, sings\, and is the primary songwriter of the band. He placed 2nd in the last Chris Austin Songwriter Competition at Merlefest in 2021. Banjo player\, Ethan Handy\, is a multi instrumentalist\, that has played in multiple bands\, and placed at several fiddler’s conventions around Southwest Virginia bringing home two first place ribbons from the Galax Fiddlers Convention. The bass player\, Emily Handy\, has played in multiple bands\, placed in the band competition at Galax Fiddler’s Convention\, and is the instructor and owner of Paige’s Piano Studio.  The youngest member\, Eric Handy\, has been playing dobro on stage in multiple bands since the age of eight\, and has placed in several fiddler’s conventions around southwest Virginia during his young career. \n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE

DESCRIPTION:The Handmade Music School presents Limberjack Decorating & Dancing with Linda Ray at The Floyd Country Store on Saturday\, May 18\, 2024 from 3:30 – 5:30 pm. Cost is $45 and includes limberjack. This workshop is great for adults and/or children. Children age 8 and over are welcome with an accompanying adult\, age 10 and over without an accompanying adult. \n\nThis workshop is a fabulous chance to dress\, paint and decorate your own special doll\, and then learn how to make them dance to the music. The first half of the workshop will be craft time followed by learning a few techniques to make the limberjack dance. Paint\, fabric\, and other materials will be provided. \nSpace is limited to 10 so sign up early! \nHistory of the Limberjack\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, Americans had many forms of home entertainment. Many of these involved the playing and enjoying of music. Jig dolls\, or limberjacks as they are sometimes called\, are one form of folk art that came out of this musical tradition. A jig doll is a jointed wooden figure that was attached to a rod and panel\, and could be manipulated by the player of an instrument or someone moving the doll to the tune of the music. The history of these dolls goes back hundreds of years\, with the first being used by itinerant Italian street performers to animate their shows. Many European countries had their own version of the jig doll. This form was brought to America with settlers and immigrants\, and it developed into a distinctive American form. Jig dolls could be carved or turned\, and were often painted to reflect a character or stereotypical image. They usually had both jointed arms and legs which flailed either wildly when moved or in a dancing motion\, depending on the skill of the handler! SUMMARY:Herbal Salve and Oil Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Applying herbs topically\, as infused oils or salves\, is one of the many ways we can utilize herbs for health and healing. Ed and Maya Skopal of I-TAL Acres will be leading a workshop which will involve identifying\, learning about\, and responsibly harvesting medicinal plants with a focus on oils and salves. Participants will learn about making tinctures as well as several methods of extracting herbs in oil\, including a demonstration of preparing an herb for oil extraction. These infused herbal oils can be used as is\, or made into healing herbal salves. Participants will either harvest herbs on site or will be provided some to make and take home their very own salve. \nAbout the instructors: Ed and Maya Skopal of I-TAL Acres are skilled herbalists and permaculturists. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. DESCRIPTION:Join Cardinal Bicycle for a weekend of gravel\, fun\, and friends! This is not a race—just a fun supported ride. \nWe will have aid stations on course\, and our short and medium routes will be marked. Riders taking on the Grande Traverse will need a GPS and be able to self-navigate—this route will not be fully marked. \nThe Venue: \nCrooked Mountain Campground is a cozy and quiet camp spot just a few miles from downtown Floyd. Make it a weekend and stay the night. Book your camping directly with Crooked Mountain. \nThe Scene: \nWe will have post-ride music from LowBrow Collective\, and the Driftwood Catering food truck will be onsite for post ride food. Stay for Saturday evening bonfires\, stargazing\, s’mores\, good times and camp shenanigans. \nThe Routes:   \n\nFloyd Piccolo Ramble: This is a beginner-friendly 16-mile gravel route\, but gravel is inherently challenging and so is this route. Riders should be comfortable with rides of at least 2.5 hours with some climbing. Riders who are not quite at that level should consider joining Cardinal Bicycle’s Tuesday ride to prepare or come to Gravel Camp Bedford for a shorter route to get started. This Floyd route is almost entirely unpaved and will have one aid station.\nFloyd Medio Mountain Wander: This 30-mile route travels through scenic rolling farmland. Some of the climbs can get steep\, but the route is fun and flows well. This ride is mostly gravel\, and it will have one aid station.\nFloyd Grande Traverse: Route coming soon! Expect about 50-60 miles of Floyd’s finest gravel (it’s all pretty fine in Floyd). Riders taking on this route should crave adventure\, and also be self-sufficient. As such\, the route will not be fully marked. Riders must have GPS and be able to self-navigate. Janiah’s son\, Nyo Allen\, offers his exceptional drumming skills\, bringing life to Father Sun’s beats and creating a tight\, cohesive groove with his father on bass. DESCRIPTION:This is the last dance of the season. The band is Cat Wranglers with Joy Greenwolfe calling. All dance figures are taught by the caller. Beginners and experienced dancers of all ages are welcome. Dress is casual and soft-soled shoes that glide work best. Come to dance or come to listen. No partner needed. \nLesson for beginners at 7:00 pm\nDance 7:30 – 10:30 pm. \nAll are welcome. If you feel sick or were recently exposed to someone with symptoms of an illness that may be contagious\, please stay home and take care of yourself\, so we can see you at our next dance. \nFloyd contra dances are held on the second Saturday from September through May at the Floyd Center for the Arts.
