Bats\, owls\, salamanders\, cicadas\, tree frogs\, nightjars\, and raccoons are just a few of the nocturnal neighbors that may make an appearance on the campus after the sun sets. Come visit Blue Mountain School’s campus and experience the heart and soul of outdoor learning in the New River Valley\, where outdoor experiences shape the daily lives of students. \nBring along your water bottle\, close-toed shoes\, and a headlamp\, along with your deer ears\, owl eyes\, and a spirit of wonder! Friends & Fixtures card holder tickets are $8\, available at the door with card. \n\nABOUT WHITETOP MOUNTAIN BAND\nThe Whitetop Mountain Band is a family-based band from the highest mountains of Virginia. Whitetop\, Virginia is an area rich in the old time music tradition; this band has deep roots in mountain music. The members have done much to preserve the Whitetop region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking and are legendary musicians and teachers of the style. \nAt the same time\, Whitetop Mountain Band shows are very versatile and entertaining containing everything from fiddle/banjo instrumentals to powerful solos and harmony vocals on blues\, classic country\, honky tonk\, traditional bluegrass numbers\, old timey ballads\, originals\, and four part mountain gospel songs. Shows also include flat foot dancing. The band is well known for their high energy and charisma on stage. \nThe Whitetop Mountain Band is one of the most popular dance bands of the Appalachian Mountains. They have a great following at square dances all over Virginia\, North Carolina\, Tennessee\, and Kentucky at venues like the Carter Family Fold. The band has also performed at all sorts of venues throughout the United States from festivals to concerts\, competitions\, and colleges. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, National Folklife Festival\, World Music Institute in NYC\, Carter Family Festival\, Dock Boggs Festival\, World Fair\, Virginia Arts Festival\, Floydfest\, Ola Belle Reed Festival and Merlefest are a few of the many festivals the band has performed at. They were featured on the NCTA Crooked Road Music tour of California\, Nevada\, Oregon\, and Idaho in October 2007 and the East Coast tour of MD\, VA\, PA\, NJ\, WV and D.C. in 2010. The band members have toured overseas in the UK\, Ireland\, and Australia. WTMB has also taught and been master musicians/dancers for workshops and classes in fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, vocals\, and dance all over the US. SUMMARY:Native American Ritual Stone Construction in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Region
DESCRIPTION:This event is free to the public. \nIn centuries past\, Native American peoples of the Southeast built thousands of stone structures for ritual purposes. The illustrated talk will focus on native stone structures in the Blue Ridge region of Virginia\, describing their forms and proposing interpretations consistent with what is known about Southeastern Native American cultures and beliefs through ethnography and analysis of material culture. \nDan Pezzoni is an architectural historian with the nationwide preservation consulting firm Landmark Preservation Associates based in Lexington\, Virginia. He is the author of the National Register of Historic Places designation report for Floyd County’s Phlegar House and wrote “Blacksburg: An Architectural Overview\,” a chapter in A Special Place for 200 Years: A History of Blacksburg\, Virginia (1998). Since 2020 he has seen or documented thousands of native stone structures from Vermont to Colorado.

Tickets are $20 general admission\, $25 reserved seating\, available for sale online and in the store. \n\nABOUT KAIA KATER\nKaia Kater’s new album\, Strange Medicine (coming May 2024 on Free Dirt Records)\, opens with a haunting vision. Accompanied by Aoife O’Donovan\, Kater sings of the women burned at the stake as witches in 17th century Salem\, Massachusetts and their wish to strike back: “I dreamt I moved through you and / Burned my name into your chest”. It’s an opening salvo from an album that celebrates the power of women and oppressed people throughout history as they rise up and turn the poison of centuries of oppression into a strange kind of medicine. Kater’s songs are dialogues with these historical figures and meditations on her own modern life as well. In the years since her 2018 album\, Grenades\, on Smithsonian Folkways\, Kater has taken time to reinvent herself and hone her skills\, first attending film school to learn composition\, then diving deeper into her songwriting to come up with her most personal album yet. Feeling the pressure as a talented young songwriter\, banjo player\, and bandleader with three successful albums and an NPR Tiny Desk Concert under her belt\, Kater struggled initially with the expectations of her adopted genre\, Americana. “I was factoring everybody else’s perception into my songwriting\,” she says. “Would I write more honestly if I knew that no one would ever hear this?” With that in mind\, Kater retreated to her apartment in Montréal. Sitting at home with her banjo\, the songs unfolded in personal intimacy\, revealing windows into the perspective of women and revolutionaries through history. \nCo-producing with Joe Grass (Elisapie\, The Barr Brothers)\, Kater invited close friends and colleagues O’Donovan and Allison Russell to sing on the album\, along with longtime hero and American legend Taj Mahal. With lush arrangements and unexpected musical ideas drawn from genres as surprising as minimalist composition\, jazz drumming\, and film scores\, Strange Medicine is the bold next step in Kater’s career. It’s an album made beyond the white gaze of Americana\, unbeholden to a music industry that so often tokenizes and silences marginalized voices\, a Black Feminist perspective on a genre that refuses to cede power to Black women. But ultimately it’s a celebration of the self. Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo\,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well. \nPerformed by The June Bug Center after-school program\, Musical Theatre for Teens. Students began practicing in August to bring the show to life in June 2024. Tickets are by donation starting at $7 and all proceeds go to The June Bug Center and it’s mission to bring the arts to Floyd. \nPerformances are June 7th at 6pm\, 8th at 2pm\, and 9th at 2pm. Tickets are $20 general admission\, $25 reserved seating\, available for sale online and in the store. \n\nABOUT DAVID PARMLEY\nDavid Parmley began his musical career at age 15 and by the time he turned 17\, he began his full time career as a member of The Bluegrass Cardinals. That band featured his father\, Don Parmley\, and three Los Angeles musicians. In 1975 they made their way to the Washington DC area and began performing several nights a week for several years. David’s lead and baritone voice was the backbone to The Cardinal sound. Dozens of musicians have worked with David and Don over the years but “The Sound” remained constant. The Bluegrass Cardinals recorded dozens of projects during their 25 year run. The material is considered the finest to come out of the 70’s and 80’s bluegrass era. David left The Bluegrass Cardinals in the 90’s to pursue a solo career. After taking some time off\, David Parmley has returned to bluegrass music with a new renewed spirit. \n\nBUY TICKETS ONLINE
