DESCRIPTION:Truvy Jones runs a successful beauty salon in Chinquapin\, Louisiana\, where all the ladies in the neighborhood have a standing Saturday appointment. Along with her anxious and eager assistant\, Annelle\, Truvy styles the hair of many of the women about town: wealthy widow and former first lady of Chinquapin\, Clairee Belcher\, local curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux (“I’m not crazy\, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”)\, intelligent and compassionate career woman M’Lynn\, and her daughter Shelby\, the prettiest girl in town. Shelby’s engagement is the talk of the town\, but the joy and excitement of her wedding quickly turn to concern as she faces a risky pregnancy and a myriad of health complications. Eventually\, when Shelby dies from complications related to her diabetes\, M’Lynn has to deal with the most difficult of life’s challenges: the loss of one’s only child. As the women of Chinquapin makes their ways over life’s many hurdles together\, they find comfort (and a fair amount of verbal ribbing) in one another. “You have no idea how wonderful you are\,” M’Lynn tells the ladies at the end of the play. Truvy responds\, with a smile\, “Of course we do.” \nTickets are $10. July 12-21 are located at The June Bug Center in Floyd County and July 26-28 is located at Pulaski Youth Center.

DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures.\nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

DESCRIPTION:The Handmade Music School is excited to announce the Third Annual Floyd Youth Get Together Camp for kids ages 7-16. These amazing five-day traditional music and dance summer camps will take place July 8th-12th and 15th-19th\, 2024 at the beautiful EcoVillage in Floyd County\, Virginia! We’re thrilled to offer two sessions this year to meet the needs of our growing youth community. The first week is geared towards beginner and intermediate players ages 7-11 and runs from 9:00-1:00pm Monday – Friday. The second week is for more advanced players ages 12-16 and runs from 9:00-3:00pm Monday to Friday. Lodging for families is available on-site. \n\nThe Floyd Youth Get Together Camp is a fun-filled week immersed in the traditional music and dance of Southwest Virginia. Our camp will offer exciting and interactive classes in fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, mandolin\, singing\, bass\, and dance. Morning and afternoon sessions will feature instruction\, performance\, presentations and enrichment activities with visiting musicians. Kids will jam together\, be involved in square-dancing and square dance calling\, perform and learn about the long history of music and dance in the Blue Ridge Mountains. \nThe first session for 7-11 year olds is geared towards beginner and intermediate students. The second session is for experienced students looking to take a deep dive into music and dance. Please reach out to info@handmademusicschool.com with questions about where your child would fit best. \nThe camp will take place at the Floyd Events Center\, which is part of the Floyd EcoVillage. The facility features a beautiful and secluded setting on 75 private acres just a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the charming town center of Floyd. DESCRIPTION:The Handmade Music School is excited to announce the Third Annual Floyd Youth Get Together Camp for kids ages 7-16. These amazing five-day traditional music and dance summer camps will take place July 8th-12th and 15th-19th\, 2024 at the beautiful EcoVillage in Floyd County\, Virginia! We’re thrilled to offer two sessions this year to meet the needs of our growing youth community. The first week is geared towards beginner and intermediate players ages 7-11 and runs from 9:00-1:00pm Monday – Friday. The second week is for more advanced players ages 12-16 and runs from 9:00-3:00pm Monday to Friday. Lodging for families is available on-site. \n\nThe Floyd Youth Get Together Camp is a fun-filled week immersed in the traditional music and dance of Southwest Virginia. Our camp will offer exciting and interactive classes in fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, mandolin\, singing\, bass\, and dance. Morning and afternoon sessions will feature instruction\, performance\, presentations and enrichment activities with visiting musicians. Kids will jam together\, be involved in square-dancing and square dance calling\, perform and learn about the long history of music and dance in the Blue Ridge Mountains. \nThe first session for 7-11 year olds is geared towards beginner and intermediate students. The second session is for experienced students looking to take a deep dive into music and dance. Please reach out to info@handmademusicschool.com with questions about where your child would fit best. \nThe camp will take place at the Floyd Events Center\, which is part of the Floyd EcoVillage. The facility features a beautiful and secluded setting on 75 private acres just a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the charming town center of Floyd. There is lodging onsite for families coming from farther away wanting to make a week of it. Tickets are $40 general admission\, $45 reserved seating\, available for sale online and in the store. \n\nABOUT JIM LAUDERDALE & THE GAME CHANGERS\nAt any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 34 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft. \nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.
