DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures.\nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

DESCRIPTION:The Town of Floyd invites you to a series of FREE events in the Warren G Lineberry Park in downtown Floyd\, Virginia\nBring the whole family and enjoy the beautiful Warren G Lineberry Park filled with music\, movies and fun activities for the whole family.\nFeaturing music\, movies\, face-painting\, inflatables\, games\, food and beverage and special activities presented by a variety of community organizations!\nThe Crooked Road has made a significant impact on the Floyd community and Southwest Virginia\, by celebrating our music heritage and inviting the world to come visit the “birthplace of country music” here in Southwest Virginia. Floyd and venues like the Floyd Country Store have invited travelers in to experience old time and bluegrass music and dancing traditions. On this night we celebrate 20 years of The Crooked Road (and 40 years of the Friday Night Jamboree at The Floyd Country Store) with an exciting night of music and dance!\nTentative Schedule:\n6:00 – Gates open\n6:05 – Handmade Music School performances\n6:30- Twin Creeks Stringband\n7:15 – The Loose Strings Band\n8:15 – Junior Sisk Band\nABOUT THE CROOKED ROAD 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION:\nThe Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail concert celebrates the traditional music that has been kept by families and communities of Southwest Virginia since colonial times. Settlers of this mountainous region since the 1700’s have brought various ingredients – a cappella gospel music from German tradition that lives in the Old Regular Baptist churches today; spirituals\, emotive singing and a musical gourd we now call a banjo from African tradition; and ballads and fiddles brought by the Scots-Irish and English. Mixed together\, these ingredients have produced one of the richest musical traditions on earth. This region produced the Carter Family\, the first family of Country Music; Jim and Jesse\, Grand Ole Opry stars and one of the most innovative bluegrass groups of the golden era of bluegrass; Ralph & Carter Stanley\, who took their home place and its mountains and distilled their very essence down into songs we can all sing. But the real heart and soul of The Crooked Road are the everyday folks who keep this music in their homes\, country stores\, in churches\, and in weekly jam sessions. The variety of it is amazing – old time string bands\, a cappella gospel\, blues\, 300 year-old ballads\, bluegrass\, and more! It is a music tradition that is as vibrant today as it has ever been.\nThe Crooked Road On Tour is a concert program of exemplary artists of The Crooked Road region who are steeped in heritage music traditions.\nJoin us in Lineberry Park as we celebrate Floyd’s important place along the Crooked Road. We will feature a variety of stringband musicians such as students from Handmade Music School\, Twin Creeks Stringband\, The Loose Strings Band and Junior Sisk Band.

SUMMARY:Kyser George & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Free show ~ \nKyser George\, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist from Mt. Airy\, North Carolina\, was nine years old when he joined with other area youth musicians to form ShadowGrass. While he held down the upright bass for several years\, Kyser transitioned to guitar in 2020. He also served as lead guitarist for The Goodfellers and Dewey and Leslie Brown and the Carolina Gentleman. \nKyser was named the North Carolina State Flatpicking Champion in 2021 and has received awards for his virtuosity on other instruments\, including bass\, Dobro\, and mandolin. Kyser has shared the stage with many great artists over his career including Mountain Heart\, Flatt Lonesome\, The Infamous Stringdusters\, Bryan Sutton\, Sierra Hull\, Lou Reid\, Sammy Shelor\, Pat Flynn\, East Nash Grass and\, at Renewal 2023\, Billy Strings. Also in 2023\, Kyser\, along with ShadowGrass\, toured with Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters in support of his River Wild project.

DESCRIPTION:Known for its bluegrass and old-time music\, along with a lively arts scene\, Floyd\, Virginia\, will celebrate its rich artistic heritage on Saturday\, August 24\, 2024\, with the Floyd Living Traditions Festival. The festival\, hosted by the Floyd Center for the Arts in partnership with the Floyd Country Store’s Handmade Music School\, will feature music on two stages and fun for the whole family. More than 70 artists will be on hand to perform\, offer works for sale\, and demonstrate Floyd traditions such as quilting\, spinning\, instrument making\, weaving\, blacksmithing\, woodworking\, and basketmaking. Food trucks\, an outdoor beer garden\, kids activities\, and opportunities to learn and create firsthand await! Saturday’s all-day event takes place both inside and out at the dairy barn campus of the Floyd Center for the Arts located at 220 Parkway Lane South (VA-8) on the edge of downtown. Admission to the festival is free on Saturday. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

With roots in the jam and blues scene in St. Louis\, KW has been churning up grooves for more than a quarter century. A blend of Rock\, Blues\, Jazz\, Country\, Bluegrass\, Funk\, and World Beat\, the Willy has been doing\nthe “Jam-Band” thing since there was barely a term. A set of KW is an eclectic and improvisatory boogieing blend of organic spontaneity that takes the audience on a journey through a ménage of sound and color\, space and time. Every show is unique. Every show is different. And every show brings an experience blended from the soulful and powerful delivery of well-crafted original music and choice covers. \nThe group boasts an all-star cast of seasoned musicians: \nDave “Chopper” Campbell\, guitar and vocals\, formerly of Dark Star Orchestra\, Dancing Earth Reunion (Blue Dixie)\, Haw Patch\nMountain Boys\, The Schwag\, and has also played with such greats as Rock founder and legend Chuck Berry\, Grammy winning artist Jim Lauderdale\, and Mike Gordon of Phish. \nBrian Jones\, bass\, Longtime friend and former Kerosene Willy bassist will be sitting in for this week’s show. \nJohn McBroom\, guitar and vocals\, formerly of Red Weather until 1999\, Blue Mule\, GOTE\, M.C. Recently Leonard Blush\nand the Camelcals has taken a bit of John’s stage time\, and he has shared the stage with Keller Williams\, members of Leftover Salmon\, members of Big Daddy Love\, and Caitlin Krisko. \nTimbo Sims\, keyboardist\, performer\, and songwriter\, of The ThrillBillyz\, The Buck and Griz Show\, and M.C. Broom & The Jam! resides in Franklin County\, VA. Timbo is a founding member of the 90’s jam band Red Weather and has since been a part of a number of live\nperformances\, session recordings\, and musical projects. \nJason Tice\, on drums\, has been bringing the back beat to Southwest Virginia bands like Timewave Zero\, The Buck & Griz Show\, Flight One\, and Gary & the Brewers for the last 20 years. He’s a staple in the region and involved in a myriad of projects in the area.

DESCRIPTION:“The Heron’s Journey” by Adam Booth- Floyd Living Traditions Festival Kick Off Event \n“The Heron’s Journey” is a 60-75 minute story told without intermission. It is a neo-traditional\, original story about a young boy who finds his true place in life while on a journey during which he transitions into a great blue heron. “The Heron’s Journey” is primarily about identity and creation. Some listeners hear it through the lens of power dynamics\, listening to intuition\, and environmentalism or access to the natural world. Audiences have been captivated by this tale and find it speaks to them on a variety of very personal levels. All of Adam’s stories are family-friendly in content\, however “The Heron’s Journey” is intended for mature listeners. Adam collaborated with three West Virginia artists during the creation of this story. \n​​\n​Adam Booth (he/him) is the 2022 West Virginia Folk Artist of the Year\, awarded at the Governor’s Arts Awards. Adam blends traditional mountain folklore\, music\, and an awareness of contemporary Appalachia to create original\, forward-thinking story artistry. Adam’s new multidisciplinary program The Heron’s Journey has been selected for the 2024-2025 Mid Atlantic Arts Touring Roster. As a nationally touring artist\, his professional telling appearances include premiere storytelling events across the United States\, including the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage\, the International Storytelling Center\, the National Storytelling Festival\, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival\, the Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, the National Storytelling Conference\, the National Academy of Medicine\, and as a Spoken Word Resident at the Banff Centre (Alberta\, Canada). He is a member of the Recording Academy and his recordings have received many national honors\, including a Parents’ Choice Gold Award.
