SUMMARY:Movement\, Metaphor and Meaning - Returning Home
DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to be offering these somatic movement based expressive arts classes to the Floyd community once again.\nThis 8 week course of Monday night classes will be a creative exploration on returning home to the body and to the heart of what matters in your life through movement and art making. There is a potent connection to be made between our physical\, emotional and imaginative experiences. As we make this connection\, movement can serve as a metaphor and a narrative that reveals\, expresses and transforms. Encountering old stories\, we discover artful ways to re-story ourselves\, bringing new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nThe introductory class on September 16th was successful and the group agreed to open registration for the 8 week course to anyone else who may be interested. Space is limited. After September 30th\, the remaining classes will be closed in order to create the intimacy which will support this transformational experience.\nClasses will begin with a self directed quiet somatic movement meditation to arrive in the body and the space which will hold our creative explorations. After a brief welcome and check in\, the group will begin exploring the week’s theme employing the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® through movement and the art mediums of drawing and creative writing. Through individual and group sharing\, witnessing and aesthetic response\, participants will potentially increase self awareness and generate additional resources to support their well-being through the ever-changing cycles of the human experience.\nAdults of all levels of ability are welcome. No previous experience in dance or art is needed. Come with the intention to heighten your somatic body awareness\, express your creative potential\, deepen your understanding of self and others and to bring new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nWhat to Bring:\nWear loose comfortable clothing. Sky High has partnered with The Color Project and Ruby Star Arts on this exciting community arts program. \nSky High Reggae Promotions facilitates peaceful enlivened multicultural\, intergenerational community connections through transportive musical experiences. We create and promote local performance and education events that celebrate global healing vibrations of conscious roots reggae music in southwest Virginia. Our mission is to improve regional access to world class reggae music\, support reggae artists and build bridges between multicultural community sectors. DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures.\nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

DESCRIPTION:Food\, Inc. 2\, a documentary film about our food system\, will be shown on Wednesday\, October 2. After a long hiatus when we screened many documentaries on line\, we are excited to be presenting this film ‘in person’ at the Floyd Center for the Arts. \nJust like old times\, we will start with a potluck and follow up with a community discussion. We have invited three speakers to help start the discussion: Maureen McNamara Best from LEAP\, a Roanoke based nonprofit that supports local farmers and systems that provide local food for all: a farmer from Riverstone Organic Farm\, and organic vegetable production farm in Floyd and Stepahnie Legarda\, a health coach based in Floyd. \nWe will open the doors at 6:00pm with the potluck schedules to start at 6:15. If you plan to participate in the potluck\, bring a dish and be sure to bring serving utensils. In the interests of minimizing use of single use plates and cutlery we encourage you to bring your own\, along with a drink of your choice. \nThe film will start at 7:00pm and the discussion will follow immediately. \nFood\, Inc. ignited a conversation about the multinational corporations that control our food system at enormous cost to our planet. Food\, Inc. 2 comes “back for seconds” to reveal how unchecked corporate consolidation has left us with a highly efficient yet shockingly vulnerable food system. \nAlong with authors Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser\, the film introduces innovative farmers\, food producers\, workers’ rights activists\, and legislators who are facing these companies head-on and fighting to create a more sustainable future. \nAs for our earlier films\, there is no charge for this event\, however a suggested donation of $5 would be helpful in allowing us to continue this work. \nWe are most grateful to the Floyd Center for the Arts for their support of this screening.

DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to be offering these somatic movement based expressive arts classes to the Floyd community once again.\nThis 8 week course of Monday night classes will be a creative exploration on returning home to the body and to the heart of what matters in your life through movement and art making. There is a potent connection to be made between our physical\, emotional and imaginative experiences. As we make this connection\, movement can serve as a metaphor and a narrative that reveals\, expresses and transforms. Encountering old stories\, we discover artful ways to re-story ourselves\, bringing new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nThe introductory class on September 16th was successful and the group agreed to open registration for the 8 week course to anyone else who may be interested. Space is limited. After September 30th\, the remaining classes will be closed in order to create the intimacy which will support this transformational experience.\nClasses will begin with a self directed quiet somatic movement meditation to arrive in the body and the space which will hold our creative explorations. After a brief welcome and check in\, the group will begin exploring the week’s theme employing the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® through movement and the art mediums of drawing and creative writing. Through individual and group sharing\, witnessing and aesthetic response\, participants will potentially increase self awareness and generate additional resources to support their well-being through the ever-changing cycles of the human experience.\nAdults of all levels of ability are welcome. DESCRIPTION:The Happy Shack Art Studio will be hosting a Cold Wax and Oil Painting workshop with multi-media artist\, writer\, and workshop instructor Gina Louthian-Stanley! \nCold Wax and Oil Painting- 2 days: September 28 and 29 • 10:00 a-3:00 p.\nDiscover the beautiful layers\, textures\, and marks that only oil and cold wax can achieve finding inspiration within your own marks\, compositions and intuition using non-traditional ol techniques. We will explore various techniques such as working methods\, substrates\, drying times\, opaque and transparent color\, pigments and powders\, blending\, color schemes\, glazing\, solvent reduction\, transfer and printmaking techniques\, creating textures\, adding collage and more.  Plenty of demos and individual discussions. A great class for beginners and those who want a refresher with advanced options. Gina will provide cold wax\, some oils\, tools\, and R&F pigment sticks for class use\, samples of Arches Oil paper\, birch panels\, various mark making tools and other samples of substrates.
