DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to be offering these somatic movement based expressive arts classes to the Floyd community once again.\nThis 8 week course of Monday night classes will be a creative exploration on returning home to the body and to the heart of what matters in your life through movement and art making. There is a potent connection to be made between our physical\, emotional and imaginative experiences. As we make this connection\, movement can serve as a metaphor and a narrative that reveals\, expresses and transforms. Encountering old stories\, we discover artful ways to re-story ourselves\, bringing new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nThe introductory class on September 16th was successful and the group agreed to open registration for the 8 week course to anyone else who may be interested. Space is limited. After September 30th\, the remaining classes will be closed in order to create the intimacy which will support this transformational experience.\nClasses will begin with a self directed quiet somatic movement meditation to arrive in the body and the space which will hold our creative explorations. After a brief welcome and check in\, the group will begin exploring the week’s theme employing the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® through movement and the art mediums of drawing and creative writing. Through individual and group sharing\, witnessing and aesthetic response\, participants will potentially increase self awareness and generate additional resources to support their well-being through the ever-changing cycles of the human experience.\nAdults of all levels of ability are welcome. No previous experience in dance or art is needed. Come with the intention to heighten your somatic body awareness\, express your creative potential\, deepen your understanding of self and others and to bring new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nWhat to Bring:\nWear loose comfortable clothing. Bare feet are preferred\, soft soled shoes required if shoes are worn. The floor of the studio is soft. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Floyd Country Store on Saturday\, October 26\, 2024 at 7:00 pm for an Old Time Halloween Dance with The Whitetop Mountain Band. Tickets are $12 general admission\, ($8 for “Friends & Fixtures” with a card.) \n\nABOUT THE WHITETOP MOUNTAIN BAND\nThe Whitetop Mountain Band is a family-based band from the highest mountains of Virginia. Whitetop\, Virginia is an area rich in the old time music tradition; this band has deep roots in mountain music. The members have done much to preserve the Whitetop region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking and are legendary musicians and teachers of the style. \nAt the same time\, Whitetop Mountain Band shows are very versatile and entertaining containing everything from fiddle/banjo instrumentals to powerful solos and harmony vocals on blues\, classic country\, honky tonk\, traditional bluegrass numbers\, old timey ballads\, originals\, and four part mountain gospel songs. Shows also include flat foot dancing. The band is well known for their high energy and charisma on stage. \nThe Whitetop Mountain Band is one of the most popular dance bands of the Appalachian Mountains. They have a great following at square dances all over Virginia\, North Carolina\, Tennessee\, and Kentucky at venues like the Carter Family Fold. The band has also performed at all sorts of venues throughout the United States from festivals to concerts\, competitions\, and colleges. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, National Folklife Festival\, World Music Institute in NYC\, Carter Family Festival\, Dock Boggs Festival\, World Fair\, Virginia Arts Festival\, Floydfest\, Ola Belle Reed Festival and Merlefest are a few of the many festivals the band has performed at. They were featured on the NCTA Crooked Road Music tour of California\, Nevada\, Oregon\, and Idaho in October 2007 and the East Coast tour of MD\, VA\, PA\, NJ\, WV and D.C. in 2010. The band members have toured overseas in the UK\, Ireland\, and Australia. WTMB has also taught and been master musicians/dancers for workshops and classes in fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, vocals\, and dance all over the US. Some of these include Swannanoa Gathering in Asheville\, NC\, Cowan Creek Music School in KY\, Mountain Music School in Big Stone Gap\, and Mt. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Movement\, Metaphor and Meaning - Returning Home
DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to be offering these somatic movement based expressive arts classes to the Floyd community once again.\nThis 8 week course of Monday night classes will be a creative exploration on returning home to the body and to the heart of what matters in your life through movement and art making. There is a potent connection to be made between our physical\, emotional and imaginative experiences. As we make this connection\, movement can serve as a metaphor and a narrative that reveals\, expresses and transforms. Encountering old stories\, we discover artful ways to re-story ourselves\, bringing new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nThe introductory class on September 16th was successful and the group agreed to open registration for the 8 week course to anyone else who may be interested. Space is limited. After September 30th\, the remaining classes will be closed in order to create the intimacy which will support this transformational experience.\nClasses will begin with a self directed quiet somatic movement meditation to arrive in the body and the space which will hold our creative explorations. After a brief welcome and check in\, the group will begin exploring the week’s theme employing the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® through movement and the art mediums of drawing and creative writing. Through individual and group sharing\, witnessing and aesthetic response\, participants will potentially increase self awareness and generate additional resources to support their well-being through the ever-changing cycles of the human experience.\nAdults of all levels of ability are welcome. No previous experience in dance or art is needed. Come with the intention to heighten your somatic body awareness\, express your creative potential\, deepen your understanding of self and others and to bring new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nWhat to Bring:\nWear loose comfortable clothing.
