DESCRIPTION:On behalf of all the Floyd Veterans\, VFW Post # 7854 and American Legion Post 127\, we would like to invite you and your organization to join the Floyd Veterans Day Parade.  Your support would be greatly appreciated.  The tradition of honoring the men and women who have served honorably in the military during times of war and peace is very important.  Your participation in the parade helps to express this appreciation and to insure that this tradition is passed from generation to generation. \nThe Floyd County Woman’s Club will be hosting a USO type canteen.   The ladies will be providing hot coffee and hot apple cider.  They will also have home baked goods such as brownies\, cakes\, cookies\, etc. \nAssembly for the parade is 1:00 PM at the Mayberry Funeral home and starts at 2:00 PM.  It will proceed North on route 8\, then right at the stop light and end on route 615 (Barberry Rd). \nWe are looking forward to having all of you join us in celebrating Veterans Day.  There will be two plaques awarded to participants in the parade.  One for most patriotic and one for best decorated.  We will also have a drawing for all Veterans who participate in the parade to win a prize.  \nIf you need more information\, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail me at any time. \nsirmac@swva.net  or 540-239-1478

An all-star cast of master musicians backs these two soul singers of country music\, Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms. These two are known to roots music fans across the globe for their soulful harmonies\, driving dance tunes\, classic original songs\, and commitment to the raw truth of rural American music. They live in the San Juan Islands of Washington\, though until recently\, home was Portland\, OR. They are foundational to the exceptional old-time and country music scene in the Pacific NW with the Caleb Klauder Reeb Willms Country Band and their membership in the Foghorn Stringband\, of which Caleb was a founding member. Country music is the music of working people who use it to pass the time and forget about the ever-present hardships in their lives. After years of touring together\, Reeb and Caleb work intuitively. \nCaleb’s study and understanding of roots music is so dedicated and rich\, that he can hauntingly immerse himself in the same perspective of those old primitive country composers and write as if he was right beside them. Their album Innocent Road includes a clutch of lovingly arranged Klauder originals\, along with well-placed and rare covers. The pair bring the spirit of legendary country duos into their contemporary takes on country music. Trading vocals back and forth\, they complement each other strikingly well in an attractive meld of honky-tonk that brushes shoulders with trad bluegrass. Caleb has penned over 50 songs many of which are standards across America in honky tonk and bluegrass jams and festivals\, both on and off stage. This weekend offers 10 plus hours of percussive dance instruction with Becky Hill & Ben Nelson\, and Sharon Leahy & Rick Good. Throughout the weekend we will engage in drills that build technical facility and expand musicality\, explore improvisation\, discuss pedagogical approaches\, try on choreography\, and much more! In addition to workshops students will get the chance to attend the Floyd Friday Night Jamboree\, dance the night away at a square dance\, and experience the beauty of Southwest Virginia. Scholarships are available! \nThe workshop will take place at the Floyd EcoVillage and the Floyd Country Store in Floyd\, Virginia. The EcoVillage features beautiful timber-framed buildings on 75 private acres just a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the charming town center of Floyd. The EcoVillage hosts a performance space with a great wooden dance floor\, stage and sound system for concerts and dances\, and a variety of teaching spaces. Lodging at the EcoVillage is available for workshop participants.\n\nIncluded in this weekend is a special performance and dance set on Saturday\, November 9 with Caleb Klauder & Reeb Willms at the Floyd Country Store. \n$325 for the weekend.

DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to be offering these somatic movement based expressive arts classes to the Floyd community once again.\nThis 8 week course of Monday night classes will be a creative exploration on returning home to the body and to the heart of what matters in your life through movement and art making. There is a potent connection to be made between our physical\, emotional and imaginative experiences. As we make this connection\, movement can serve as a metaphor and a narrative that reveals\, expresses and transforms. Encountering old stories\, we discover artful ways to re-story ourselves\, bringing new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nThe introductory class on September 16th was successful and the group agreed to open registration for the 8 week course to anyone else who may be interested. Space is limited. After September 30th\, the remaining classes will be closed in order to create the intimacy which will support this transformational experience.\nClasses will begin with a self directed quiet somatic movement meditation to arrive in the body and the space which will hold our creative explorations. After a brief welcome and check in\, the group will begin exploring the week’s theme employing the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® through movement and the art mediums of drawing and creative writing. Through individual and group sharing\, witnessing and aesthetic response\, participants will potentially increase self awareness and generate additional resources to support their well-being through the ever-changing cycles of the human experience.\nAdults of all levels of ability are welcome. No previous experience in dance or art is needed. Come with the intention to heighten your somatic body awareness\, express your creative potential\, deepen your understanding of self and others and to bring new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nWhat to Bring:\nWear loose comfortable clothing. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Our printmaking techniques\, such as letterpress and handmade books\, offer a way for our community to experience the power of the printed word and a tradition steeped in social justice\, literary works\, and cultural transformation. We are delighted to announce our 2nd annual Wayzgoose celebration– a printer’s tradition from the 16th century\, celebrating the transition from printing by sunlight to candlelight. \nThe printed word and art\, and the sharing of stories and food\, are ancient ways of building community and of sharing a message. More and more in our world today\, people feel alienated\, and afraid\, especially in rural America. Political\, racial\, and religious differences are being reinforced through divisive rhetoric on all sides. There are few opportunities for real human connection or developing a sense of community and belonging\, let alone ones that bridge these cultural gaps. The 2024 Wayzgoose at Springhouse will be a time to highlight the voices of immigrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers through the art of printing\, the sharing of stories\, and making and sharing a meal together. \nWe are excited to welcome Salvador Jiménez-Flores\, interdisciplinary artist from Jalisco Mexico\, and founder of the Tortilla Social\, an interactive printmaking and food workshop where participants use a multi-functional tortilla press to make their own art work and to eat freshly made tortillas. This event will include a workshop from Jiménez-Flores and community meal\, followed by a community conversation with Jiménez-Flores and members of our regional community. \nNo one is turned away for lack of funds.
