DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures.\nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

DESCRIPTION:**TICKET SHOW – Get yours before they sell out** \nCountry traditionalist JP Harris is hitting the road hard this fall for his Bloodshot Records debut\, JP Harris Is A Trash Fire\, produced by JD McPherson. Harris is also respected fixture of several scenes around his adopted hometown of Nashville\, TN — you can find him working on Nashville’s historic homes\, riding and fixing old motorcycles\, or picking through scrap piles for useable refuse. In a musical landscape of period-correct reproduction\, “outlaw” internet posturing\, and flavor-of-the-month variants on country\, JP Harris Is A Trash Fire burns bright as a dumpster in a Walmart parking lot on a moonless night; some will fear it\, some will gravitate to its acrid warmth\, and most will have no idea what to make of the situation. \nJP’s historic restoration carpentry has continued to be a baseline for his relationship to music; the yin to his yang\, the Burt to his Ernie\, the Dolly to his Porter. It was through this concurrent line of work that he met another twice-initialed singer with a penchant for old Americana music\, obscure film\, and overly elaborate ethnic meal preparations: one JD McPherson. The two became fast friends and would eventually\, through many twists\, turns\, false starts\, and biblically-proportionate plagues\, enter a modest studio in Nashville to record JP Harris Is A Trash Fire. \nOver the course of nine months in 2023\, they recorded a sometimes lush\, sometimes sparse\, and sometimes jarring country album of Harris’ originals\, loudly and violently squelching any attempt to pigeon-hole a song into any subgenre of country music. Only albums by Lee Hazelwood and an obscure folk album Waylon Jennings made when his hair was still short were allowed to be mentioned in reference. This is a MUST SEE duo! \nHailing from Upstate NY\, SIRSY plays sassy singer-songwriter pop-rock with a charming intensity and lots of heart and soul. Sirsy’s passionate and down to earth live shows have loads of entertaining stories and even some nerdy jokes. They can somehow make an audience sing along\, dance\, laugh\, and cry – all at the same show. They really know how to connect with the audience. \nPlaying more than 200 shows per year all over the US\, Sirsy is fronted by a charismatic\, soulful\, powerhouse of a lead vocalist. (Seriously\, wait until you hear Mel sing!) Mel is also the band’s drummer (and she’s been featured in Modern Drummer). She simultaneously plays bass on a keyboard with her drumstick. She also plays piano\, melodica\, and the occasional badass flute solo too. Mel’s bandmate\, husband\, co-writer\, & bestie is Rich Libutti. Rich masterfully plays a well-loved and road worn Rickenbacker through a pedal board full of vintage effects. He sounds like 3 guitarists all on his own at live shows. Rich also plays bass (and at live shows often does it on a pedal board with his feet). These 2 multi-instrumentalists manage to sound like a full band and somehow do it all with big smiles on their faces. Their clever smart songs have more hooks than a tackle box\, with lyrics that center around empowerment and resilience. Fans have supported the duo through the pandemic\, their 11 records\, and Mel’s 2 bouts with cancer. Every show is like a celebration for this couple and their fans. Come celebrate life with them! \nSirsy’s had songs on the hit tv show “Shameless”\, the NFL\, HBO\, MTV\, and PBS. They are regulars on NPR. This class will focus on how to connect with a partner\, learn to hear the music\, and dance with confidence. No prior experience is needed. \nStephanie Wolf has been dancing for decades and is excited to offer private\, semi private\, and small group dance lessons through the Handmade Music School. She is teaching Country/Texas Two-Step\, other styles of Two-Step\, Cajun\, Zydeco\, and Waltzing. These lessons will be FUN and ATTAINABLE for all. \n“I took my first Waltz class in 1995 and I was hooked! SUMMARY:Movement\, Metaphor and Meaning - Returning Home
DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to be offering these somatic movement based expressive arts classes to the Floyd community once again.\nThis 8 week course of Monday night classes will be a creative exploration on returning home to the body and to the heart of what matters in your life through movement and art making. There is a potent connection to be made between our physical\, emotional and imaginative experiences. As we make this connection\, movement can serve as a metaphor and a narrative that reveals\, expresses and transforms. Encountering old stories\, we discover artful ways to re-story ourselves\, bringing new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nThe introductory class on September 16th was successful and the group agreed to open registration for the 8 week course to anyone else who may be interested. Space is limited. After September 30th\, the remaining classes will be closed in order to create the intimacy which will support this transformational experience.\nClasses will begin with a self directed quiet somatic movement meditation to arrive in the body and the space which will hold our creative explorations. After a brief welcome and check in\, the group will begin exploring the week’s theme employing the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® through movement and the art mediums of drawing and creative writing. Through individual and group sharing\, witnessing and aesthetic response\, participants will potentially increase self awareness and generate additional resources to support their well-being through the ever-changing cycles of the human experience.\nAdults of all levels of ability are welcome. No previous experience in dance or art is needed. Come with the intention to heighten your somatic body awareness\, express your creative potential\, deepen your understanding of self and others and to bring new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nWhat to Bring:\nWear loose comfortable clothing. Bare feet are preferred\, soft soled shoes required if shoes are worn. The floor of the studio is soft. Bring a water bottle and whatever will provide you comfort: a blanket\, cushion for sitting\, … chairs are provided if needed. If desired\, bring a personal journal.\nFor those who are new comers and trying this first class before committing to the series of classes\, art supplies will be provided.\nFee for trying the first class\, Experience TLAP\, on Sept. 30th is $20. Airy\, NC.  They formerly lived in Ararat\, VA\, a small community at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.   For many years\, Richard Bowman\, his wife\, Barbara\, and their daughter Marsha\, have spent weekends playing music.  Richard plays fiddle\, Barbara the bass and Marsha plays claw-hammer banjo.  The band has a winning tradition by winning and placing at fiddler’s conventions they have attended throughout the years.  Richard\, on fiddle\, and Marsha\, on claw-hammer banjo\, have received many individual awards.  The Slate Mountain Ramblers play for shows\, dances\, family and community gatherings\, benefits and compete at fiddler’s conventions throughout the year.  They have played internationally at the Austrian Alps Performing Arts Festival and in Gainsborough\, England for the Friends of American Old Time Music and Dance Festival.

This class will focus on how to connect with a partner\, learn to hear the music\, and dance with confidence. No prior experience is needed. \nStephanie Wolf has been dancing for decades and is excited to offer private\, semi private\, and small group dance lessons through the Handmade Music School. She is teaching Country/Texas Two-Step\, other styles of Two-Step\, Cajun\, Zydeco\, and Waltzing. These lessons will be FUN and ATTAINABLE for all. \n“I took my first Waltz class in 1995 and I was hooked! Next came Swing dancing\, Square dancing\, Contra dancing\, Two Step (several styles) Cajun Two Step\, and Zydeco dancing. I learned every style I had access to! SUMMARY:Movement\, Metaphor and Meaning - Returning Home
DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to be offering these somatic movement based expressive arts classes to the Floyd community once again.\nThis 8 week course of Monday night classes will be a creative exploration on returning home to the body and to the heart of what matters in your life through movement and art making. There is a potent connection to be made between our physical\, emotional and imaginative experiences. As we make this connection\, movement can serve as a metaphor and a narrative that reveals\, expresses and transforms. Encountering old stories\, we discover artful ways to re-story ourselves\, bringing new vision to the life themes that matter to us.\nThe introductory class on September 16th was successful and the group agreed to open registration for the 8 week course to anyone else who may be interested. Space is limited. After September 30th\, the remaining classes will be closed in order to create the intimacy which will support this transformational experience.\nClasses will begin with a self directed quiet somatic movement meditation to arrive in the body and the space which will hold our creative explorations. After a brief welcome and check in\, the group will begin exploring the week’s theme employing the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® through movement and the art mediums of drawing and creative writing. Through individual and group sharing\, witnessing and aesthetic response\, participants will potentially increase self awareness and generate additional resources to support their well-being through the ever-changing cycles of the human experience.\nAdults of all levels of ability are welcome. No previous experience in dance or art is needed. DESCRIPTION:On behalf of all the Floyd Veterans\, VFW Post # 7854 and American Legion Post 127\, we would like to invite you and your organization to join the Floyd Veterans Day Parade.  Your support would be greatly appreciated.  The tradition of honoring the men and women who have served honorably in the military during times of war and peace is very important.  Your participation in the parade helps to express this appreciation and to insure that this tradition is passed from generation to generation. \nThe Floyd County Woman’s Club will be hosting a USO type canteen.   The ladies will be providing hot coffee and hot apple cider.  They will also have home baked goods such as brownies\, cakes\, cookies\, etc. \nAssembly for the parade is 1:00 PM at the Mayberry Funeral home and starts at 2:00 PM.  It will proceed North on route 8\, then right at the stop light and end on route 615 (Barberry Rd). \nWe are looking forward to having all of you join us in celebrating Veterans Day.  There will be two plaques awarded to participants in the parade.  One for most patriotic and one for best decorated.  We will also have a drawing for all Veterans who participate in the parade to win a prize.  \nIf you need more information\, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail me at any time. \nsirmac@swva.net  or 540-239-1478

An all-star cast of master musicians backs these two soul singers of country music\, Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms. These two are known to roots music fans across the globe for their soulful harmonies\, driving dance tunes\, classic original songs\, and commitment to the raw truth of rural American music. They live in the San Juan Islands of Washington\, though until recently\, home was Portland\, OR. They are foundational to the exceptional old-time and country music scene in the Pacific NW with the Caleb Klauder Reeb Willms Country Band and their membership in the Foghorn Stringband\, of which Caleb was a founding member. Country music is the music of working people who use it to pass the time and forget about the ever-present hardships in their lives. After years of touring together\, Reeb and Caleb work intuitively. \nCaleb’s study and understanding of roots music is so dedicated and rich\, that he can hauntingly immerse himself in the same perspective of those old primitive country composers and write as if he was right beside them. Their album Innocent Road includes a clutch of lovingly arranged Klauder originals\, along with well-placed and rare covers. The pair bring the spirit of legendary country duos into their contemporary takes on country music. Trading vocals back and forth\, they complement each other strikingly well in an attractive meld of honky-tonk that brushes shoulders with trad bluegrass.
