DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

This class will focus on how to connect with a partner\, learn to hear the music\, and dance with confidence. We will introduce ways to respond easily and consistently to the music’s rhythms\, simple turns\, and a few embellishments that will make you the talk on the dance floor! No prior experience is needed. \nStephanie Wolf has been dancing for decades and is excited to offer private\, semi private\, and small group dance lessons through the Handmade Music School. She is teaching Country/Texas Two-Step\, other styles of Two-Step\, Cajun\, Zydeco\, and Waltzing. These lessons will be FUN and ATTAINABLE for all. \n“I took my first Waltz class in 1995 and I was hooked! Next came Swing dancing\, Square dancing\, Contra dancing\, Two Step (several styles) Cajun Two Step\, and Zydeco dancing. I learned every style I had access to! Five-time International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Banjo Player of the Year\, and winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass\, Sammy Shelor leads the group that is constantly breaking new ground in acoustic music. With two stellar lead vocalists\, Jesse Smathers (guitar) and Adam Miller (mandolin)\, and the impressive talents of Mike Hartgrove (fiddle) and Kameron Keller (bass)\, the band seamlessly comes together\, performing the trademark sound that fans continue to embrace. \nALLEN MILLS of The Lost & Found \nThe Lost & Found formed in 1973\, the original lineup of the band consisted of bass player Allen Mills\, banjo player Gene Parker\, mandolin player Dempsey Young and guitarist Roger Handy. The band became quite popular playing bluegrass festivals\, with Mills’ exceptional songwriting contributing much to the group’s fame; “Love of the Mountains\,” recorded by the original lineup\, has become a bluegrass standard. We are excited to have legends Allen Mills and Gene Parker with us for this evening of music! \nJUNIOR SISK \nJunior Sisk is widely recognized as one of today’s top bluegrass vocalists and is a constant reminder that traditional bluegrass is still alive and well. A longtime resident of the Virginia Blue Ridge\, his bluegrass pedigree runs deep. Influenced by a father who wrote songs and played guitar and a mother who sang\, Sisk first learned to play around age 14. \nHis early influences included The Stanley Brothers\, Larry Sparks\, and Dave Evans\, but he often credits the Johnson Mountain Boys with inspiring him to pursue bluegrass professionally. Sisk first made his mark in bluegrass as a songwriter in the early 1990s\, penning classic Lonesome River Band songs like “Game (I Can’t Win)” and “Tears Are Blinding Me.” \nJEFF MIDKIFF \nA composer\, mandolinist\, and clarinetist\, Jeff Midkiff is a musician who feels comfortable in more than one musical setting. Jeff grew up in Roanoke\, Virginia\, where bluegrass music thrived. Given his first mandolin at the age of 7\, he moved quickly into the world of fiddlers’ conventions and contests. Midkiff earned a degree in music education from Virginia Tech. While studying classical repertoire\, he continued to gain attention as a mandolin and fiddle player. In 1983 he joined the Lonesome River Band\, which would eventually become one of bluegrass’s most acclaimed groups. After performing\, touring\, and recording two albums\, he left the band to earn a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from Northern Illinois University. Jeff has spent the last thirty years balancing both musical loves. He has played clarinet in numerous orchestras and has also performed mandolin with the Milwaukee Symphony. His solo CD\, Partners In Time\, has gained international acclaim. He is an orchestra director in the Roanoke City Schools and received the 2017 Yale Distinguished Music Educator award. \nMidkiff’s Mandolin Concerto\, “From the Blue Ridge\,” was composed and premiered in 2011 for the Roanoke Symphony and their Music Director David Stewart Wiley. The piece has been performed by the Rochester Philharmonic\, Jacksonville Symphony\, Boulder Philharmonic\, Knoxville Symphony\, Lancaster Symphony\, Champaign-Urbana Symphony\, Shreveport Symphony\, Williamsburg Symphony\, Bryan Symphony\, Northwest Florida Symphony\, Symphony of Southeast Texas\, Ohio Northern Symphony\, Cal Poly Symphony\, Carmel Symphony\, Signature Symphony at TCC\, Oak Ridge Symphony\, Bryan Symphony\, Lancaster Symphony\, Yale Concert Band and The Boston Symphony Orchestra. \n\nBuy Tickets Online

DESCRIPTION:**TICKET SHOW – Get yours before they sell out** \nCountry traditionalist JP Harris is hitting the road hard this fall for his Bloodshot Records debut\, JP Harris Is A Trash Fire\, produced by JD McPherson. Harris is also respected fixture of several scenes around his adopted hometown of Nashville\, TN — you can find him working on Nashville’s historic homes\, riding and fixing old motorcycles\, or picking through scrap piles for useable refuse. In a musical landscape of period-correct reproduction\, “outlaw” internet posturing\, and flavor-of-the-month variants on country\, JP Harris Is A Trash Fire burns bright as a dumpster in a Walmart parking lot on a moonless night; some will fear it\, some will gravitate to its acrid warmth\, and most will have no idea what to make of the situation. \nJP’s historic restoration carpentry has continued to be a baseline for his relationship to music; the yin to his yang\, the Burt to his Ernie\, the Dolly to his Porter. It was through this concurrent line of work that he met another twice-initialed singer with a penchant for old Americana music\, obscure film\, and overly elaborate ethnic meal preparations: one JD McPherson. The two became fast friends and would eventually\, through many twists\, turns\, false starts\, and biblically-proportionate plagues\, enter a modest studio in Nashville to record JP Harris Is A Trash Fire. \nOver the course of nine months in 2023\, they recorded a sometimes lush\, sometimes sparse\, and sometimes jarring country album of Harris’ originals\, loudly and violently squelching any attempt to pigeon-hole a song into any subgenre of country music. Only albums by Lee Hazelwood and an obscure folk album Waylon Jennings made when his hair was still short were allowed to be mentioned in reference.
