DESCRIPTION:What is Chromatography? \nChromatography is a way of taking a “photograph” of the invisible dynamics at work in soil samples. Rather than relying purely on quantifiable data\, chromatography is situated squarely in the realm of aesthetic perception. \nSoil chromatography is simple enough to do in your own kitchen\, and affordable enough for almost anyone to do it. Soil chromatography relies on the human being and our personal relationship to these pictures. \nThe pictures produced from soil or compost (called “chromas”) can be analyzed for soil organic matter (SOM)\, enzyme diversity\, and overall integration. Some practitioners read these images on a subtler level\, looking for signs of etheric vitality and astral dynamism. \nLike learning a musical instrument or developing a feeling for art\, “reading” these pictures requires practice. It is about developing an inner aesthetic eye. The first step is doing it yourself\, so we invite you to join us at the JPI farm from March 21-23\, 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival will host A Celtic Celebration just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Traditional and contemporary instrumentals and vocals from Ireland\, Scotland and Canada including beautiful slow airs\, waltzes\, lively jigs\, reels\, Scottish marches and strathspeys will delight the audience and get your toes tapping. Musicians are Katherine Wiley\, Fiddle; David Scheim\, Harp and Piano\, Geoffrey Sauer\, Pipes\, and Ash Devine\, Vocals. These extraordinary musicians will entertain us on Sunday March 16\, 2:30pm at The Presbyterian Church of Floyd. Admission for students is free and adults are $15.00 in advance at virginiasblueridgemusicfestival.org and at the door. DESCRIPTION:Every Sunday afternoon The Floyd Country Store comes alive with community music during our old time and bluegrass music jams. Bring your instrument and join in the music or grab some food and be our audience! The jam is open and free for everyone. \n12:00pm – 1:00pm: Old-Time Beginner Jam in the Floyd Country Store Community Room\n1:30pm – 3:30pm: Old-Time Music Jam\n4:00pm – 5:30pm: Bluegrass Jam \nJoin us for old time beginner jams from 12:00 to 1:00 in the Floyd Country Store Community Room. The old time jam session starts at 1:30 and is hosted by a different string band each week\, leading tunes at a moderate speed. Traditional instruments and dancers welcome! At 4:00 the bluegrass jam kicks off\, with hosts who lead the group in bluegrass songs and tunes. Song selections and solos pass around the circle. Sunday Music Jams are a great way to see traditional music the way it has been played and handed down for centuries\, amongst friends and family in a community setting.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Floyd Country Store on Saturday\, March 15\, 2025 at 7:00 pm for a Tribute to Randall Hylton — this live concert features a reunion of members of The Virginia Squires — Sammy Shelor\, Mark Newton\, Ronnie Simpkins with Jesse Smathers and The Comptons.\nTickets are $30 general admission\, $35 reserved seating\, available for sale online and in the store. \n\nBorn in in Willis\, Virginia in Floyd County\, Randall Hylton learned to play the guitar at the age of five and soon started to write his own songs\, one of which was recorded by bluegrass Gospel group The Lewis Family in 1967. \nIn 1973 he moved to Nashville with the aim of devoting his career to writing country songs. However\, that ended in disappointment\, and in 1977 he switched his focus to writing for bluegrass music\, setting up his own publishing company\, Greasy Creek Music. As he attended more bluegrass festivals\, he established a rapport with many of the groups that he met\, and his song-writing career launched from there. \nHe penned more than 250 songs with some of his best-known including 32 Acres; Gonna Be Movin’; Cold Sheets Of Rain; Slippers With Wings; Once And For Always; I’ve Heard The Wind Blow; Country Poor\, Country Proud; Where Rainbows Touch Down; Room At The Top Of The Stairs; Slowly Getting You Out Of The Way; Mountain Laurel; Pulleybone Gayden; Hallelujah Turnpike; Goodtime Get-Together; and China Grove My Hometown. \nArtists who have recorded these and other Hylton originals include Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver; The Bluegrass Cardinals; The Virginia Squires; The Lewis Family; Charlie Waller & The Country Gentlemen; Ralph Stanley; Lester Flatt; Curly Seckler; Continental Divide; Larry Sparks & The Lonesome Ramblers; Knoxville Grass; the Osborne Brothers with Mac Wiseman & many more. \nABOUT THE VIRGINIA SQUIRES: The Virginia Squires were a bluegrass group comprised of Rickie Simpkins (fiddle\, mandolin\, vocals)\, Ronnie Simpkins (bass\, vocals)\, Sammy Shelor (guitar\, banjo\, vocals) and Mark Newton (guitar\, vocals). The Simpkins Brothers originate from a musical family from Christiansburg\, Virginia. They played together in a family group but eventually formed Upland Express\, a bluegrass band that had an album release on Leather Records in the 70s. They separated in the early 80s\, when Rickie worked with the McPeak Brothers and Ronnie became a member of the Bluegrass Cardinals. In 1982 they reunited in Richmond\, in a band called the Heights Of Grass\, but early in 1983\, with Mark Newton (previously a member of Knoxville Grass) and Sammy Shelor (one-time member of the Country Boys)\, they became the Virginia Squires.
