The old time jam session starts at 1:30 and is hosted by a different string band each week\, leading tunes at a moderate speed. Traditional instruments and dancers welcome! At 4:00 the bluegrass jam kicks off\, with hosts who lead the group in bluegrass songs and tunes. Song selections and solos pass around the circle. DESCRIPTION:Come sing with us! \nShape note is an American tradition of unaccompanied harmony singing with roots that stretch back into the Colonial period. It takes its name from the musical notation system to aid in sight-singing where notes are written on the page with different shapes\, each corresponding to the degree of the scale. There are no concerts — we sing for the fun of singing! \nTunebooks we sing from are The Sacred Harp (1991/2025 Denson edition)\, The Shenandoah Harmony\, and The Valley Pocket Harmonist. Loaner books are available. All are welcome! No experience with sheet music or singing necessary!

DESCRIPTION:The Music of the Mountains exhibit at the Floyd Historical Society museum focuses on the music of Appalachia\, particularly music that has a Floyd County touch. It includes items that range from early church music to the present music scene\, along with information about individual musicians such as Blind Alfred Reed\, Randall Hylton\, Arthur Conner\, as well as local groups. \nThe Museum is open each Friday and Saturday (through December 6) from noon until 4 pm. There is no admission fee. \nThe Museum Store specializes in books with a focus on local history. We also have a variety of other items\, many of them perfect for gifting history lovers. \nCome visit us in person while you’re in Floyd. There’s a friendly docent awaiting. And visit our website year-round; it’s always open and you can shop from wherever you are!

SUMMARY:Pete Denahy Concert
DESCRIPTION:Pete Denahy knew when he was 11 years old he wanted to be a country singer. At age 12 he taught himself guitar\, started writing songs and at 13 years old saw Australia’s King of Country Music Slim Dusty in concert for the first time. Twelve years later he was in Slim’s band playing fiddle and doing a comedy spot on the show. While he has written some ridiculous comedy songs\, he is no stranger to writing a heart wrencher\, but he is fully aware that his “silly songs” are the ones that are closest to the hearts of his fans. \nHe cut his teeth in the mid nineties playing fiddle in Melbourne band Ploughboys before joining Slim Dusty on the road in 1998. As his songwriting began to mature\, he turned his pen more often to the less serious side. As a result\, his most requested songs are comedy\, one of them being “Sort Of Dunno Nothin’”\, a tuneless\, storyless number that presents a teenager talking to an adult in the most boring manner possible. This song became something of a hit in 2008 when it was released in Australia. \nHis solo show has evolved into a blend of straight and comedy material interspersed with some solid fiddle playing. His onstage persona is a guy who is an enthusiastic money saver and is proud of the fact he is Yackandandah’s “multi award losing country singer” even though he has won five Golden Guitars at Australia’s Country Music Awards. However\, he seldom mentions this because as he says\, “There’s nothing funny about winning awards.” \nHis latest record “She Loves Me To The Moon” is not a comedy release but a traditional country album featuring his own fiddle playing\, twangy guitars and wailing pedal steel. Produced by Simon Johnson at Hillbilly Hut Studio\, it includes fine playing by some of Australia’s best and a collection of new tracks penned with help from the Wolfe Brothers\, Mike Carr\, Bill Whyte (Nashville) and Evan Murphy (Mile Twelve).

DESCRIPTION:Every Sunday afternoon The Floyd Country Store comes alive with community music during our old time and bluegrass music jams. Bring your instrument and join in the music or grab some food and be our audience! The jam is open and free for everyone. \n12:00pm – 1:00pm: Old-Time Beginner Jam in the Floyd Country Store Community Room\n1:30pm – 3:30pm: Old-Time Music Jam\n4:00pm – 5:30pm: Bluegrass Jam \nJoin us for old time beginner jams from 12:00 to 1:00 in the Floyd Country Store Community Room. The old time jam session starts at 1:30 and is hosted by a different string band each week\, leading tunes at a moderate speed. Traditional instruments and dancers welcome! At 4:00 the bluegrass jam kicks off\, with hosts who lead the group in bluegrass songs and tunes. Song selections and solos pass around the circle. Sunday Music Jams are a great way to see traditional music the way it has been played and handed down for centuries\, amongst friends and family in a community setting.
