DESCRIPTION:Tall tales are as old as the Appalachian hills. For the first time in Southwest Virginia\, the best yarn spinner will be crowned at the Liars Contest\, Nov. 16\, in Floyd\, Virginia\, at the June Bug Center. The contest starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize and a golden shovel to honor their storytelling prowess.“Liars contests are taking off around the country\,” said Clint Atwater\, founder of Storytelling ConnectIons\, LLC\, and Let Me Tell Ya! events\, which produced the show. “Audiences love the outlandish tales and unforgettable stories. You have to wonder\, are the tellers stretching the truth or all-out lying?” Atwater said any family friendly topic is fair game\, including fish stories\, aliens\, “strike it rich\,” ghosts and vacation adventures. “I’m pretty excited about what the contestants will come up with.”\nContestants of all ages pay $10 to enter. They’re required to preregister through Eventbrite\nat https://Inyurl.com/mtuh47ay. Take a left on Indian Valley Rd (RT 787) and go 0.6 miles to the Replenish Festival on the Right (just after the big white Barn)! \nFrom the North: Depends on where you are coming from…..if you are coming South on I-81\, use the East directions. There are 2 ways to find Floyd from that direction…either come through Roanoke via I-81 to I-581 to SR221 South to the Floyd Stoplight or via I-81 to the RT 8 South/Floyd/Christiansburg exit to the Floyd Stoplight. If you come Rt8\, about 5 miles before the Town of Floyd\, turn Right on Rt 730 (Ridgeview Rd). Continue to the stop sign on Rt 750 (Alum Ridge Rd). Go straight on Rt 730 (now Duncan’s Chapel) to a Left on RT 787 (Indian Valley Rd). Go 4 miles to the Replenish Festival on the Left! SUMMARY:Pete Denahy Concert
DESCRIPTION:Pete Denahy knew when he was 11 years old he wanted to be a country singer. At age 12 he taught himself guitar\, started writing songs and at 13 years old saw Australia’s King of Country Music Slim Dusty in concert for the first time. Twelve years later he was in Slim’s band playing fiddle and doing a comedy spot on the show. While he has written some ridiculous comedy songs\, he is no stranger to writing a heart wrencher\, but he is fully aware that his “silly songs” are the ones that are closest to the hearts of his fans. \nHe cut his teeth in the mid nineties playing fiddle in Melbourne band Ploughboys before joining Slim Dusty on the road in 1998. As his songwriting began to mature\, he turned his pen more often to the less serious side. As a result\, his most requested songs are comedy\, one of them being “Sort Of Dunno Nothin’”\, a tuneless\, storyless number that presents a teenager talking to an adult in the most boring manner possible. This song became something of a hit in 2008 when it was released in Australia. \nHis solo show has evolved into a blend of straight and comedy material interspersed with some solid fiddle playing. His onstage persona is a guy who is an enthusiastic money saver and is proud of the fact he is Yackandandah’s “multi award losing country singer” even though he has won five Golden Guitars at Australia’s Country Music Awards. However\, he seldom mentions this because as he says\, “There’s nothing funny about winning awards.” \nHis latest record “She Loves Me To The Moon” is not a comedy release but a traditional country album featuring his own fiddle playing\, twangy guitars and wailing pedal steel. Produced by Simon Johnson at Hillbilly Hut Studio\, it includes fine playing by some of Australia’s best and a collection of new tracks penned with help from the Wolfe Brothers\, Mike Carr\, Bill Whyte (Nashville) and Evan Murphy (Mile Twelve).
