Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Additionally\, the brunch will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the history and recognize the decades long commitment the school has made to the young minds and hearts of our community. As it enters its forty-third academic school year\, Blue Mountain School invites the community to share a meal and conversation with the school’s administrators\, staff\, Board Members and school community members. \n“We want to celebrate the generous connections that have cultivated an ecosystem of support\,” says Director Tammie Sarver\, “from our ancient roots to our new budding community\, and the slow growth along the way.” \nJoin the school wide community and explore the organization through story and presentation; hear the exciting and ambitious plans for growth; and cheer with the Blue Mountain School community as they show their deepest gratitude to the donors whose past\, present and future generosity roots the school in its place. \nThe food and coffee will be prepared by the Red Rooster staff and feature local ingredients along with espresso based drinks at a cash bar. DESCRIPTION:The Rhythmajigs with George Segebade calling. Treat yourself to an evening of easy\, relaxed fun with lots of smiles and live music. All dance figures are taught by the caller\, and there is a free lesson at 7:00 pm before the dance which runs from 7:30 – 10:30 pm. Beginners and experienced dancers\, all ages\, welcome. Come alone or with a partner; dress is casual and soft-soled shoes that glide work best. \nAll are welcome. DESCRIPTION:2nd Annual Sourced Press Wayzgoose:\nFestival de impresión/ Printing Festival at Springhouse \nNovember 1st\, 2024\, 4-8pm\n4-5:30PM – Printing & Workshops\n6-8PM – Tortilla Social Dinner & Community Conversation \nSourced Press\, Springhouse’s print shop\, opened its doors in May 2023 to share the message that a new world is possible. Our printmaking techniques\, such as letterpress and handmade books\, offer a way for our community to experience the power of the printed word and a tradition steeped in social justice\, literary works\, and cultural transformation. We are delighted to announce our 2nd annual Wayzgoose celebration– a printer’s tradition from the 16th century\, celebrating the transition from printing by sunlight to candlelight. \nThe printed word and art\, and the sharing of stories and food\, are ancient ways of building community and of sharing a message. More and more in our world today\, people feel alienated\, and afraid\, especially in rural America. Political\, racial\, and religious differences are being reinforced through divisive rhetoric on all sides. There are few opportunities for real human connection or developing a sense of community and belonging\, let alone ones that bridge these cultural gaps. The 2024 Wayzgoose at Springhouse will be a time to highlight the voices of immigrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers through the art of printing\, the sharing of stories\, and making and sharing a meal together. \nWe are excited to welcome Salvador Jiménez-Flores\, interdisciplinary artist from Jalisco Mexico\, and founder of the Tortilla Social\, an interactive printmaking and food workshop where participants use a multi-functional tortilla press to make their own art work and to eat freshly made tortillas. This event will include a workshop from Jiménez-Flores and community meal\, followed by a community conversation with Jiménez-Flores and members of our regional community. \nNo one is turned away for lack of funds. All dance figures are taught by the caller. Beginners and experienced dancers of all ages are welcome. Come alone or with a partner; dress is casual and soft-soled shoes that glide work best. DESCRIPTION:Tall tales are as old as the Appalachian hills. For the first time in Southwest Virginia\, the best yarn spinner will be crowned at the Liars Contest\, Nov. 16\, in Floyd\, Virginia\, at the June Bug Center. The contest starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize and a golden shovel to honor their storytelling prowess.“Liars contests are taking off around the country\,” said Clint Atwater\, founder of Storytelling ConnectIons\, LLC\, and Let Me Tell Ya! events\, which produced the show. “Audiences love the outlandish tales and unforgettable stories. You have to wonder\, are the tellers stretching the truth or all-out lying?” Atwater said any family friendly topic is fair game\, including fish stories\, aliens\, “strike it rich\,” ghosts and vacation adventures. “I’m pretty excited about what the contestants will come up with.”\nContestants of all ages pay $10 to enter. They’re required to preregister through Eventbrite\nat https://Inyurl.com/mtuh47ay. SUMMARY:Floyd-Blacksburg Combined Contra Dance
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, December 14th for a special combined Floyd and Blacksburg contra dance. Andrew Carter and friends will be playing and Joy Greenwolfe will be calling. All dances will be taught. \nBeginner lesson – 7:00 pm\nDance – 7:30 – 10:30 pm \nAll are welcome. If you feel sick or were recently exposed to someone with symptoms of an illness that may be contagious\, please stay home and take care of yourself\, so we can see you at our next dance.

SUMMARY:There's the Buffalo!
DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.
