SUMMARY:Floyd Living Traditions Festival
DESCRIPTION:Known for its bluegrass and old-time music\, along with a lively arts scene\, Floyd\, Virginia\, will celebrate its rich artistic heritage on Saturday\, August 24\, 2024\, with the Floyd Living Traditions Festival. The festival\, hosted by the Floyd Center for the Arts in partnership with the Floyd Country Store’s Handmade Music School\, will feature music on two stages and fun for the whole family. More than 70 artists will be on hand to perform\, offer works for sale\, and demonstrate Floyd traditions such as quilting\, spinning\, instrument making\, weaving\, blacksmithing\, woodworking\, and basketmaking. Food trucks\, an outdoor beer garden\, kids activities\, and opportunities to learn and create firsthand await! Saturday’s all-day event takes place both inside and out at the dairy barn campus of the Floyd Center for the Arts located at 220 Parkway Lane South (VA-8) on the edge of downtown. Admission to the festival is free on Saturday. SUMMARY:Floyd Living Traditions Festival Kick Off Event
DESCRIPTION:“The Heron’s Journey” by Adam Booth- Floyd Living Traditions Festival Kick Off Event \n“The Heron’s Journey” is a 60-75 minute story told without intermission. It is a neo-traditional\, original story about a young boy who finds his true place in life while on a journey during which he transitions into a great blue heron. “The Heron’s Journey” is primarily about identity and creation. Some listeners hear it through the lens of power dynamics\, listening to intuition\, and environmentalism or access to the natural world. Audiences have been captivated by this tale and find it speaks to them on a variety of very personal levels. All of Adam’s stories are family-friendly in content\, however “The Heron’s Journey” is intended for mature listeners. Adam collaborated with three West Virginia artists during the creation of this story. \n​​\n​Adam Booth (he/him) is the 2022 West Virginia Folk Artist of the Year\, awarded at the Governor’s Arts Awards. Adam blends traditional mountain folklore\, music\, and an awareness of contemporary Appalachia to create original\, forward-thinking story artistry. Adam’s new multidisciplinary program The Heron’s Journey has been selected for the 2024-2025 Mid Atlantic Arts Touring Roster. As a nationally touring artist\, his professional telling appearances include premiere storytelling events across the United States\, including the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage\, the International Storytelling Center\, the National Storytelling Festival\, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival\, the Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, the National Storytelling Conference\, the National Academy of Medicine\, and as a Spoken Word Resident at the Banff Centre (Alberta\, Canada). He is a member of the Recording Academy and his recordings have received many national honors\, including a Parents’ Choice Gold Award. August 3\, 2024 10:00AM – 4:00PM \nChanterellefest is “A Celebration of Foraging Fungi” where we will have multiple education stations to learn about mushroom foraging\, cooking\, cleaning\, storage & cultivation!\nWe have about a dozen local arts & craft vendors coming to sell their wares and will have music on our Gap Stage from 11:00A until 3:45P provided by Rebekah & Matt Hiser with special guest Scott Patrick as well as Hazy Mill. \nPicnic style food\, snacks & drinks will be available in the Tuggle’s Gap shop\, so bring your chairs & blanket for a nice lunch with live music! Our shop is also stocked with great mushroom foraging tools like field guides & specialty knives\, as well as the Official Chanterellefest Tshirt! \nKids activities include a Fairy House Building contest to work on beforehand and on the day of the event we will have a chanterelle drawing contest with prizes going to the best in each contest! Winners will be selected by votes on social media.\nPARKING IS LIMITED AT TUGGLE’S GAP\, SO PLEASE CARPOOL!\nMessage us or call (276)692-2220 with any questions!

DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

DESCRIPTION:How does Buffalo Mountain inspire you? Pack up your photos\, poems\, and paintings…polish up your stories of memorable hikes or the song you’ve written…and join the party! Old Church Gallery invites you to explore our permanent collection and There’s the Buffalo! exhibits inside\, then shop our silent auction\, mingle\, and enjoy live music on the lawn. George Slusher\, Joel Pratt\, and Charlie Thompson (plus others) will be kicking things off with a special performance from Willard Gayheart and Ricky Cox to follow at 5:00. This event is in conjunction with the Give Local NRV Day of Giving…all donations go toward building a new space for sharing more of Floyd County’s culture.
