DESCRIPTION:2nd Annual Sourced Press Wayzgoose:\nFestival de impresión/ Printing Festival at Springhouse \nNovember 1st\, 2024\, 4-8pm\n4-5:30PM – Printing & Workshops\n6-8PM – Tortilla Social Dinner & Community Conversation \nSourced Press\, Springhouse’s print shop\, opened its doors in May 2023 to share the message that a new world is possible. Our printmaking techniques\, such as letterpress and handmade books\, offer a way for our community to experience the power of the printed word and a tradition steeped in social justice\, literary works\, and cultural transformation. We are delighted to announce our 2nd annual Wayzgoose celebration– a printer’s tradition from the 16th century\, celebrating the transition from printing by sunlight to candlelight. \nThe printed word and art\, and the sharing of stories and food\, are ancient ways of building community and of sharing a message. More and more in our world today\, people feel alienated\, and afraid\, especially in rural America. Political\, racial\, and religious differences are being reinforced through divisive rhetoric on all sides. There are few opportunities for real human connection or developing a sense of community and belonging\, let alone ones that bridge these cultural gaps. The 2024 Wayzgoose at Springhouse will be a time to highlight the voices of immigrants\, refugees\, and asylum seekers through the art of printing\, the sharing of stories\, and making and sharing a meal together. \nWe are excited to welcome Salvador Jiménez-Flores\, interdisciplinary artist from Jalisco Mexico\, and founder of the Tortilla Social\, an interactive printmaking and food workshop where participants use a multi-functional tortilla press to make their own art work and to eat freshly made tortillas. This event will include a workshop from Jiménez-Flores and community meal\, followed by a community conversation with Jiménez-Flores and members of our regional community. \nNo one is turned away for lack of funds. Suggested rate of $30. Enter an amount that works for you. Learn more about our economic approach here. \nRegistration includes workshop activities and dinner.\nRegistration closes October 23rd.

DESCRIPTION:The Happy Shack Art Studio will be hosting a Cold Wax and Oil Painting workshop with multi-media artist\, writer\, and workshop instructor Gina Louthian-Stanley! \nCold Wax and Oil Painting- 2 days: September 28 and 29 • 10:00 a-3:00 p.\nDiscover the beautiful layers\, textures\, and marks that only oil and cold wax can achieve finding inspiration within your own marks\, compositions and intuition using non-traditional ol techniques. We will explore various techniques such as working methods\, substrates\, drying times\, opaque and transparent color\, pigments and powders\, blending\, color schemes\, glazing\, solvent reduction\, transfer and printmaking techniques\, creating textures\, adding collage and more.  Plenty of demos and individual discussions. A great class for beginners and those who want a refresher with advanced options. Gina will provide cold wax\, some oils\, tools\, and R&F pigment sticks for class use\, samples of Arches Oil paper\, birch panels\, various mark making tools and other samples of substrates. Additional tools will be available for sale.\nCost for the workshop is $325 per person.\nParticipants are welcome to bring beverages\, snacks and lunches. DESCRIPTION:The Floyd Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the return of the Floyd Plein Air Biennial\, the week-long outdoor painting festival\, to take place at sites in and around beautiful Floyd County on September 22 – 28\, 2024. This will be the fourth time the Center has invited and hosted a field of regional and national artists as part of this Biennial Event\, which also occurred in 2017\, 2019\, and 2022. The Center is excited to bring artists back to paint. \nFulfilling the role of 2024 event judge\, we will welcome Laura McManus\, who serves as Curator of Education for the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College. DESCRIPTION:Old Church Gallery proudly presents our 2024 exhibit “There’s the Buffalo!” Over twenty local artists share their personal visions of Floyd County’s legendary Buffalo Mountain using textiles\, photography\, painting\, and glasswork. Also included in the exhibit are memories of early 20th Century life around Buffalo Mountain taken from 1999-2001 interviews with longtime residents.\nAs the Cultural Arts Museum for Floyd County\, our permanent exhibit spaces are filled with glimpses of life here from prehistoric stone tools to contemporary sculptures. \nWe’re at 110 Wilson Street (between Finders Keepers and Hotel Floyd) with ample parking and walking access off the town Heritage Trail. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Floyd Living Traditions Festival
DESCRIPTION:Known for its bluegrass and old-time music\, along with a lively arts scene\, Floyd\, Virginia\, will celebrate its rich artistic heritage on Saturday\, August 24\, 2024\, with the Floyd Living Traditions Festival. The festival\, hosted by the Floyd Center for the Arts in partnership with the Floyd Country Store’s Handmade Music School\, will feature music on two stages and fun for the whole family. More than 70 artists will be on hand to perform\, offer works for sale\, and demonstrate Floyd traditions such as quilting\, spinning\, instrument making\, weaving\, blacksmithing\, woodworking\, and basketmaking. Food trucks\, an outdoor beer garden\, kids activities\, and opportunities to learn and create firsthand await! Saturday’s all-day event takes place both inside and out at the dairy barn campus of the Floyd Center for the Arts located at 220 Parkway Lane South (VA-8) on the edge of downtown. Admission to the festival is free on Saturday.
