The Handmade Music School Presents:
Handmade at Home – A Virtual Workshops Series
“Round Peak Fiddle & Banjo Interaction” with Paul Brown & Terri McMurray
*Suggested donation of $15
The Round Peak tradition is particularly focused on the interplay of fiddle and banjo. In this workshop, Paul and Terri will share insights into the brilliant approaches by Round Peak masters they personally knew to making intensely powerful fiddle and banjo music. They hope that what you bring from this session will help you become a better musician, no matter where your style sense and inclinations ultimately lead you.
Long-timers in the old-time world, Paul Brown & Terri McMurray are especially fond of the music of northwest North Carolina and Southwest Virginia. They’ve devoted great attention and years of time to understanding the old styles of banjo and fiddle from Grayson and Carroll counties in Virginia down into Surry County, North Carolina.
They both studied banjo intensively with the late Tommy Jarrell, a masterful banjoist and fiddler. Paul has also focused on comprehending the evolution of fiddle styles in the region, from some of the old Celtic-sounding tunes of southwest Virginia to the Round Peak styles in North Carolina, and on to the emergence of bluegrass fiddling from the springboard of radio stars including Arthur Smith.
