Appalachian Winter Traditions: Greenery, Wreaths and the Fairy.

Learn the rich traditions of winter greenery and wreath making in the Appalachian Mountains. Discover how the plants and trees of winter played an important role in the lives of Mountain Grannies while you create your own medicinal and magical winter wreath to take home.

Hemlock, Juniper, Pine, Holly, Oak, these trees and the plants of winter held powerful meaning in the lives of those who lived in the hollers among them. In this class we’ll not only explore the historical uses of plants commonly (and some that are not so commonly) associated with the winter holidays, but also the roles they played in folk magic and Appalachian culture.
