The theme of The Old Church Gallery 2018 exhibit season is reflective of the functionality of selected Floyd County heritage baskets that will be available for community enjoyment throughout 2018.

Appalachian baskets are as varied as their makers; some are made of oak from the north side of a hill; some are made of poplar sapling strips gleaned with a butcher knife. Some are made of grasses, sweet smelling and tender to the touch. The basketmakers featured in the exhibition this year have left our community with many visual treasures that link our past with our present. Family members who were skillful with their hands often made baskets for their family needs. The forms they used were sometimes traditional and sometimes a little whimsical in nature. We recognize that family ingenuity and individual expression along with those who added to their family income with their basketmaking skills have left our community richer for them having been a part of its history and an influence on the present Floyd Community of basketmakers

The Old Church Gallery hours are Fridays from 2 PM to 5 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM. The Old Church Gallery is tucked behind Finders Keepers on 110 Wilson Street, Floyd, VA, and is always free.
