A Night of One Act Plays:

“Hello Herman” by John Buffalo Mailer. Directed by Arianna Agnew.

Set in the not so distant future, in the United States, sixteen-year-old Herman Howards makes a fateful decision. He enters his suburban school and kills thirty-nine students, two teachers, and a police officer. Just before his arrest, he emails his idol, famous journalist Lax Morales, sending him clips of the shootings captured with Herman’s own digital camera. In the clips, Herman tells Lax, “I want to tell my story on your show”. Lax, haunted by his own past, is now face to face with Herman. The movie explores why and how a massacre like this can happen in our society, desensitizing in America, youth violence and bullying, the impact the media has on our individual quest for fame, and ultimately our need for connection.

“Rest Stop” by Lee Paasch. Directed by David Kuiken.

Conservative Ben Gerard doesn’t understand his 15-year-old daughter, Christi, who bitterly tries to exert her independence. Mimi, the wife, and mother, tries to straddle the widening gulf between father and daughter during a family “vacation.” A wistful stranger, Violet Aldrich, appears, but is it too late to salvage the family? “Hitchcockian” suspense that leads to a shocking ending.

“Say Nothing”
by C.R. Wright. Directed by Skyler Goad.

Class President Emily delivers a touching eulogy to the student body after the recent suicide of classmate Elliot. But when her speech is over, she is approached by Elliot’s best friend, who accuses her of standing idly by while Elliot was bullied for being gay. Emily is forced to confront her own hypocrisy and her small, but meaningful, role in his death.
