First Annual SustainFloyd/Apple Ridge Farm ENERGY FAIR

July 15, 2017 : 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

First Annual SustainFloyd/Apple Ridge Farm Energy Fair

Saturday, July 15,  10-5

SustainFloyd and Apple Ridge Farm to Host the Floyd Energy Fair at Chantilly Farm on July 15

Two Floyd County non-profit organizations, SustainFloyd and Apple Ridge Farm, are hoping to electrify both adults and children with fascinating exhibits and fun at the Floyd Energy Fair at Chantilly Farm on Saturday, July 15.  The Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be interactive and informative.

Apple Ridge Farm, which offers educational experiences to underserved families and children, is working with SustainFloyd to present information on off-grid classrooms; solar homes; energy conservation and efficiency; electric cars; renewable power including wind and solar; sustainable agriculture and forestry; green products; weatherization; energy auditing and much more.

The event at Chantilly Farm will be held rain or shine. Admission will be $5.00 per family and $3.00 for individuals and tickets will be sold at the door.

The Floyd Energy Fair will feature the SustainFloyd VoltzWagon, a solarized wagon that produces electricity for community events.  Many such interactive exhibits in the Floyd Energy Fair will be at Chantilly Farm, a beautiful campground and outdoor events venue tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Floyd, Virginia (www.chantillyfarm.com). The address is 2697 Franklin Pike SE, Floyd, VA 24091.

One especially interesting feature of the Energy Fair will be a guided bus tour of Apple Ridge Farm in Floyd County, showcasing its new EBase USA: Blue Ridge. This is an off-grid, solar and wind-powered classroom, housed in a fully remodeled 1917 railway boxcar donated by the National Railway Historical Society and renovated through a community volunteer program with international corporation AkzoNobel.

There are only five such EBases (Educational Bases) in the world…one in Antarctica, three in India and one in the United States (at Apple Ridge Farm in Floyd County).  A sixth EBase off-grid classroom is under construction in Mexico.  Sir Robert Swan, a polar explorer and environmentalist, started the global EBase movement.

SustainFloyd and Apple Ridge Farm hope everyone will mark their calendars for Saturday, July 15 and plan on spending the day at beautiful Chantilly Farm learning how families can save energy, save money and help preserve and protect our natural environment.

Apple Ridge Farm is a 501©3 non-profit organization that offers a variety of activities and programs which transform the lives of our community’s underserved children and families through educational, cultural, and outdoor experiences. Their 96 acre facility offers lodging, conference and retreat center, wedding venues, 5 miles of hiking trails, low ropes and high ropes courses, and more. (http://appleridge.org)

SustainFloyd is a 501©3 non-profit organization that works to leverage and preserve Floyd County’s existing assets and traditional strengths in agriculture and craftsmanship to help build a resilient rural local economy.
