Paul Brown has played banjo and sung since he was a small child. He learned his first old-time music from his mother, who learned it as a child in piedmont Virginia. Paul studied banjo and fiddle intensely with Tommy Jarrell of Mount Airy, NC, and fiddle with, Luther Davis, Robert Sykes, Benton Flippen and others. He’s won many awards for his playing, and has produced or recorded numerous highly respected albums of senior musicians. He played with his wife Terri McMurray in the Toast String Stretchers, and the two now perform as a duo.

Terri McMurray studied banjo with Tommy Jarrell of Mount Airy, NC and specializes in playing clawhammer banjo for band and duet settings. She won the Galax Old Fiddlers Convention banjo prize in 1982 and was a founder of the Old Hollow String Band with Kirk Sutphin and Riley Baugus. Terri played for 25 years with the Toast String Stretchers and currently plays with her husband Paul Brown in duo settings.
