American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Summer Field Day is a nationwide on-the-air radio event. Floyd Amateur Radio Society (FARS) participates in Field Day for the fun of talking with people across the country or just across the table. It’s a chance for radio operators to practice their skills, socialize, and use their equipment in order to be prepared for emergencies. They also meet awesome people and make friends both near and far. You are invited to come and see amateur radio, often called “ham radio,” in action. Ham radio is a way to talk around the world without the internet or cell phones.

Summer Field Day will be held at the “Cottage” at Chantilly Farm at 2697 Franklin Pike SE, Floyd, VA on Saturday June 22 3pm-8pm, and Sunday, June 23 12pm-2pm. Anyone who wants to can give it a try, and talk on the radio during Field Day, with the help of a licensed ham radio operator. All ages are welcome. Field Day gives us a chance to assemble a radio “shack” without being connected to the electric grid, and to practice setting up radio gear in abnormal situations under less-than-optimal conditions.

Our local group helps as weather spotters during weather events, and provides communication support for elections, parades, and other community events. We continually develop our skills necessary to assist during emergencies.

Information will be available about how you can become a licensed ham operator and friendly operators will answer any questions you might have.
