A Conversation About Contemporary Art

July 31, 2018 : 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A Conversation about Contemporary Art at the Floyd Center for the Arts.

The current exhibition at the Floyd Center for the Arts presents work by 6 recent winners of Virginia Museum of Fine Art Fellowships. Their work provides a broad sampling of contemporary art ranging from the historical tradition of oil painting to common objects being repurposed into sculpture. Although several of the artists use photography, they practice it in unique and unusual ways.

This exhibition provides an appropriate setting for an evening of open discussion about contemporary art covering such questions as: Should artists of today be concerned about maintaining past traditions? In what ways do today’s artists reflect the social and cultural realities of our times?, and, What current directions interest you? Artist Charlie Brouwer will lead the discussion and he’s looking forward to some lively discussion about what is going on in contemporary art and what relevance it might have for us and our world today. He will also give a brief overview of the VMFA Fellowship program – an annual program that has supported individual Virginia artists since 1940.

Free and open to the public, July 31, 7pm, in the Hayloft Gallery, Floyd Center for the Arts. http://floydartcenter.org/a-conversation-about-contemporary-art/
